Poorly Designed Champions (From a Silver's point of view)
Hey guys. I've been playing league since the end of season 2, but mainly only for fun. From time to time I do go on ranked tryhard sprees, but I'm mostly a casual player that just tries to get better (mainly in teambuilder). After all of this playing, I would like to share my thoughts on poorly designed champions.
I'm gonna define a poorly designed champ as having an aspect in their kit that has little or no counterplay or champions that do not actually seem to be represented well by their abilities. These do not mean OP Champs. These are champions that are problematic due to the natures of their kit or ones that don't seem to make any sense. I'm gonna be providing my reasoning as to how these champions are poorly designed, and from my point of view, how they can be fixed.
Anyone feel free to let me know if you disagree with any of my champ selections, or just any thoughts.
Here's a table of contents for people who are looking if a certain champ is on this list: Cho'Gath Dr. Mundo Fiora Heimerdinger Kalista
Cho'Gath. I feel as if this champ has more of an identity crisis than a balance problem. He's starting to make a comeback on the competitive scene (Thanks Bjerg), but as an AP Mage/Bruiser. From what I know, I've seen Cho being built in three ways: Tank, AP, and On-hit/AD (and mixes of these). Now I don't really have a problem with a champion being able to be built different ways (Fizz, Ezreal), these different ways are played so differently that they kind of corrupt the identity of our favorite om-nom-nom'er. Cho'Gath's lore has nothing to point us in the right direction, but other things do. Cho'Gath eats the world, for example, focuses on the idea of Cho'Gath's ultimate making it huge and destroying the world (fun af btw). Most players would also agree that Cho'Gath is most defined by his ultimate and its stack system. So from that, Cho seems to be a tank. What would I do to fix Cho's identity up a little? Well the ultimate is key to Cho'Gath's kit, as its his most defining feature. His Q gives him a "wtf is this thing" kind of feel, which is good when you're facing a huge monster. His W is basically a "good lord man chill out" type of skill, also appropriate to his playstyle. The ability that I would suggest changing would be his E. Cho'Gath will always have a possible on-hit build as long as that ability exists, and it kind of takes away from his play style (am I fighting Cho or Rammus?). What would I suggest? A stronger version of his E. One similar to Rek'Sai's Q that is turned on with a cooldown, but with significantly more damage, and more significant range on his stacked E.
Dr. Mundo. This guy was such a monster back in the day. Now, he's just lack luster compared to other champions. He takes little skill to use, and just is not fun to play against either. Although his kit speaks very well to his lore (crazy scientist gone hulk), I feel as if his gameplay could be improved with a few abilities being changed up. My suggestion would be to change some abilities around. His Q, Infected Cleaver, really does not live to its name. All it really is just spam-spam cleaver. My suggestion to changing the ability would be to make it strong not just against squishies, but to all champions; as a trade-off, it would have a punishment for missing the otherwise rewarding ability. Here is my thoughts on what his new Q should be:
Infected Cleaver. Deals X% current HP damage (less than live). Applies a debuff for 2 seconds that involves a 40% slow, and a DoT that does X% of target's maximum HP. If Dr. Mundo misses this ability, he loses X amount of his AD (it's his only weapon guys).
This new Q would provide Mundo players with a little bit more of thinking of how to use their Q instead of just spamming it. Also, it gives Mundo more of an ability to duel other tanks. I feel as if his other abilities are fine except his W. The only problem I have with this ability is its lack of scaling, basically just making it a cc-reduction late game. My suggestion for this would be to give it a weak AD scaling. This could incentivize some off-builds for Mundo, allow for some ability synergy (with his E, which would also work with the suggested Q), and for Mundo to actually do some damage.
Fiora. I'm pretty sure everyone expects this champion to be on this list and here she is. now I'm gonna be honest. I hate this champion. She's my second most hated champion and for good reason. She just does too much damage. She has a dumb amount of mobility+damage, most of it being hard to play against, especially as an ADC. She is incredibly snowbally, and is a win or lose type of champion. She either stomps lane and snowballs the rest of the game, or loses and proceeds to be useless for the most part. Late game she falls off, so it's win hard or don't win at all with this champ. How would I fix Fiora? I would change the most toxic part of her kit. Her ultimate. Fiora's ult does huge amounts of damage while making her untargetable, even by turrets. The only change needed to fix this would be simple: Turrets can hit Fiora while she is blade waltzing . This change alone would make her significantly easier to lane against, and she would still be an incredible duelist late game. While a melee adc doesn't tend to do that well late game anway, Fiora can still work with the right comps. This would simply reduce her unfair factor significantly.
Heimerdinger. The Donger himself. How could anyone dare to challenge such a perfect combination of swag, genius, and sex appeal? Riot could. Heimerdinger is a champion that honestly is not fun to play against (unless you're Syndra). He does a stupid amount of damage early game, and the worst part is, YOU CAN'T GANK HIM. While late game he falls off a little due to the difficulty of getting reliable turret placement, he is horrible to play against early game. I would suggest a nerf to Heimerdinger's early game, being this:
Heimerdinger's turret damage is reduced by 20% when an enemy champion is 3 times by a turret. This would scale (20-15-10-5-0) with levels, and would simply make Donger a little more tolerable to lane against. His ult would stay the same though. Mega Turret. Like that thing just needs to stay awesome.
Congrats Riot. You have created a champion made specifically to piss me off. Kalista is one of the most annoying champions to have to play against. She has the best mobility in the game, does a dumb amount of aoe damage, and is 2sp00ky4me. The part about her kit that I hate the most though, is that her e out damages smite. Like come on Riot. Kalista is an easy champion to fix. Just give her passive a little more counter play (like an indicator of where she's jumping maybe) in order to make her not immune to skill shots. And a cap to her E against neutral monsters, or maybe just to make it a debuff, that way dragon and baron can't receive it. Although I do feel as if this champion has things that simply should never be in the game, she does provide incredible diversity and it's always nice to see fresh mechanics in the game.
**Now here are some honorable mentions **
One Spear One kill. Sounds like a terrible porno movie title tbh, but that's the way this champion works. Why not include Nid in this list? The spear is dodgeable, she falls off late game, and is squishy.
Such a bad champion. Riot's working on fixing her they say though, so no need to reiterate.
Short range mage. That's enough of a weakness already.
He's just FOTM imo. People are gonna figure out how to prevent his crazy mid game.
Same deal as Eve
So tl;dr: Cho'Gath's multiple build variety makes him lack an identity. Change his E. Mundo is just boring. Change his Q and W. Fiora is annoying. Nerf her ult. Heimerdinger is impossible to lane against effectively. Nerf his turrets early game. Kalista does more damage than smite and has a crazy passive. Cap her E to baron and dragon and change her passive up a little.
So thanks a lot guys for reading this far, and remember, these are just my thoughts. I'm sure some of them are wrong, but I feel as if this could be a step in the right direction. Feel free to leave your opinions and comments below, but remember to be kind to each other
