In reality, all they've done is take away more player choice from the game. Every layer of abstraction reduces how much personal expression exists in the game, out of necessity of maintaining a controlled environment. Player takes different runes/masteries, they shift their numerical power forcing them to play differently to compensate. Player takes different reworked runes, their attempts to play to either the champion's design or the rune's design will result in less effective play.
