Why are placements a punishment?

I get demoted 3 ranks winning 5-5 and 7-3. Why is it so stupid? This seems to happen to everyone. What is riots problem?

The purpose of placements is not to just put you back where you were, or give you a free promotion. It's to reassess where you belong according to your MMR, depending on how you do in the placements as well, plus EVERYONE this season loses some MMR so on average most people will be demoted some. Even Challengers were dropped 3 entire Tiers into Platinum.

It would make sense if the ranking wasn't completely broken
