AP Bruiser Itemization
I think it would be pretty cool for there to be some sort of item on AP melee champs that does what Black Cleaver/Trinity does for AD bruisers.
For example, Black Cleaver gives pretty much anything a bruiser would want (health for tankiness to stay alive in duels so that they are able to get more rotations of their abilities off, damage since a bruiser wants damage so that they can win duels, CDR so that their rotations come up faster in duels, armor pen to make extended duels more in their favor, and movespeed to stay on enemies in the fight), but there is nothing for AP champs that would make them more of a bruiser in the same way. Many of the AD bruisers right now use Trinity Force over Black Cleaver though, since many of the good bruisers at the moment synergize well with sheen procs. Both of these items are 1-item power spikes that give AD bruisers almost everything they need to function well, but for AP champs to achieve comparable results to these items usually require 2-3 full items.
AD bruisers don't really need as much mana or armor/magic resist stats to function, since their abilities generally cost low mana and the AD bruisers are tanky enough with high base stats so that they are naturally harder to kill. If AD bruisers run out of mana, they can still fight since they still do high auto attack damage.
The only real AP champ that is kind of a bruiser is Rumble, since he doesn't need CDR at all and can go for AP survivability items.
For an AP champ to become bruisery, they would need health, AP, CDR, and some mana generation to function like a bruiser. The AP item that fits many of these goals effectively is Rod of Ages, but the item doesn't really act as a 1-item power spike for champions since it needs to be stacked to its full potential and that it gives no CDR to allow AP champions to get more rotations of their abilities off in extended duels, which an AP bruiser desperately needs since they don't gain extra damage on their autoattacks for the most part by building AP. Shurelya's does give all of these goals, but that item's stats are too low (due to the cost) for that to be the go-to for AP bruiser, plus that item honestly kinda sucks on basically all non-support champs.
Another reason why AP bruisers don't really work is because the AP itemization is geared basically for either mages or assassin only. AD Bruisers can buy Sterak's, Guardian Angel, Titanic Hydra, Death Dance, Maw of Malmortius, and Mercurial Scimitar (into certain comps) to fulfill the bruiser role by giving them survivability, damage, and CDR. AP champs only have Zhonya's and Banshee's, which are more suited to quick encounters rather than extended duels, and Liandry's, which is made to be a good AP item in design, but doesn't make the champion archetype exist by itself since it gives no CDR or mana, and the item only really fits certain champs.
I feel like it would be pretty cool for some AP champs to be played as bruisers, without it being a troll or off-meta pick, since some AP champs feel like their kit is meant to be for a bruiser. Two perfect examples of this are Diana and Fizz, since they have kits where they can get onto people and stick with them, have survivability in their kits (Diana W and Fizz E), and can fight with people in extended duels with their on-hit passives, but they have to resort to being AP assassins since the items that could make them into AP bruisers just don't exist in the game, and can kind of be achieved by finishing a combo of 2 full items (such as Rod of Ages into Nashor's).
I also think there should be more AP items in the game, since it feels like the AP item pool is small for most champs in its current state.
Those are my thoughts on AP bruiser itemization, and AP items in general.
My only issue is there's nothing for mana champs, which is where your post comes in.
Would like to see a
tune up to match 1 shot builds that are going around right now.
But even now it's a weird balance challenge because
is a 100% must buy, but really only works on a few champions (league is reknown for sucking at balance anyways)
is an ap bruiser. He also builds like bruisers should be building. He gets offensive HP items and then goes into tank items. I don't see why items need to be made specifically for them.
