[Long] Give Players the Option to Flip the HUD
I shopped up the above hasty example; obviously it can be done cleaner.
While the isometric view is inherently unfair for a variety of minor reasons, I believe the main problem is the HUD.
The HUD's positioning is a detriment to Purple side for these two basic reasons:
-
Less Valuable Camera View
-
The HUD mainly blocks much of the southern view, meaning the natural north(ish) directed view becomes more pronounced. Almost wherever the camera is positioned, Blue side maintains an advantage because they retain a directed view towards their enemy, while Purple side is, in a way, left facing backwards towards their own territory.
-
Overall, Purple side must use significantly more thought towards camera control in order to maintain an equal value of camera view.
-
Champion Dislocation
-
To maintain equal camera view, Purple side must dislocate their view from their champion. To obtain the same offensive, forward looking view, Purple side needs to move their camera lower and left. Rather than being partially obscured, if not entirely visible, Purple side must sacrifice the view of their flank. To this extent, Purple is more vulnerable to ganks, as well as more risk calculation and movement to keep map awareness and safety.
-
With greater champion dislocation, greater calculation and effort is required. All mechanics are more cleanly and easily executed with a locked camera. When having a locked camera, the champion is centered, meaning lessened-variable calculations for determining distances and angles between champion, allies, and goals and threats. The more dislocation there is, the greater the potential for error. Since in most situations Purple side is required to be more dislocated from their champion, they naturally have more risk for equal reward in every game.
While practice and skill will minimize those detriments, they will always have an unfair effect on the game. Though the highest levels of play are not nearly as endangered as the lower levels, we can all relate to the skill shots that would've been dodged if we had time to react for a few more pixels of movement.
By flipping the HUD, Purple side is given the most possible equalized view without requiring manipulation of the map. This option would not change how the game runs and does not need be forced upon players who prefer the current, static HUD.
It should be noted that reversing the basic HUD is not a crutch, a nerf, a buff, or anything of the like; it is a personal preference akin to the advantage or disadvantage gained from resizing one's own HUD. Some players will find benefit, while others will prefer to stay the same.
I believe the implementation of this option would be relatively quick and easy to accomplish. Regardless of the ultimate effectiveness of creating this option, it would be purely positive addition for the community and overall in-game experience.
Riot, please create an option to reverse the HUD.

Some paraphrased arguments that have been made from a recent Reddit thread:
- It would take getting used to, my eyes go to certain spots of the screen by muscle memory when looking for things
- It should be a settings option. It allows players who like it to feel more comfortable, while players who dislike it simply don't turn the setting on.
- Or you simply move your camera slightly down and get the same view
- You would achieve the same view, but at the cost of dislocating the visual safety bubble around your champion.
- Currently, both sides have their south-east view somewhat blocked off (assuming mid-lane is north-south). This is an advantage for blue because the loss of sight is always coming from their own territory. If purple wants to have the same view, they have to dislocate the camera from being centered on their champion, meaning an extra calculation for determining distance between them and their surroundings AND completely cutting off vision of their own top flank.
- While flipping the HUD would not entirely fix the differences, giving the option to flip it would allow many players to feel more comfortable, letting them focus on their mechanics, map awareness, etc..., rather than fussing over an unfair difference in camera control.
- But camera control, viewpoint and angel is the same for both sides. If you have the camera at the same position, you see the same thing.
- Yes, but the value of what you're seeing is changed since one side has more view of enemy territory, while the other has view of its own. From both an offensive and defensive standpoint, having vision of your enemies' territory is valued higher.
- Furthermore, when not camera locked, a person must also keep track of their own champion since they can be anywhere on or off the screen, rather than having a solid foundation in the middle of the screen.
- It's not unfair just suck it up and get used to purple side
- It is unfair because it requires one side to have two detriments to their play (see previous).
- Even if these detriments accounted for .01% of matches being significantly affected and assuming that each of the 27 million players per day (Forbes) were to only take part in one 10 player match each day, that's still 270 matches a day, or 98,550 matches a year - as a very unrealistic bottom number.
- Although this is just an educated guess, a more likely minimum would probably reach at least 1,500,000 games per year, with 35,000 of those games being decidedly won or lost by this factor.
