Can someone explain to me what a "Soft/Hard ELO Reset" is and how it affects players who are ranked?

So in my recent matches I've seen people chatting up the topic of "the season 6 ELO reset". I didn't ask what it was about since I was too concentrated on playing and communicating more about the current objectives at hand than something off topic and distracting. What made me spike the question is that I found out ELO Resets affects _ALL _CURRENTLY ACTIVE RANKED PLAYERS, not only this but apparently it happens at the start of every new season. So my question is, what are Soft/Hard ELO Resets and how will it affect me?

Riot resets your MMR at the beginning of every season and then everybody has to play 10 placement games to get placed. This is called a soft reset because, although they reset your MMR, they take into account your placement the previous season and how good you were last season to place you again. So for me since im Gold 2 that means that if I do alright in my promos i will most likely be placed in gold and if i do great i will be low Plat. If i do horrible I will get high silver. I cant get bronze because my MMr from previous seasons is too high. This is a soft reset.

A hard reset is if you change servers. Your MMR resets completely and it doesn't matter what you were before that.
