How Does Pre-Lvl 30 Normal Queue Work?

Hi,

I started playing League recently. My account is A Drunk Cate and its level 30, but I haven't played any Ranked yet. I've also tried to check my MMR, but I don't have one since I haven't played Ranked yet. My friend also started playing with me and he is level 26.

Recently, we've been matched up against Golds, Platinums, and Diamonds in our Normal queue. Why is this? We are Pre-level 30 with no Ranked experience and we are being matched up against really good players. Its not fun being stomped to the ground.

So, can someone explain how Pre-level 30 Normal Queue works?

Basically RNG. Normal MMR is separate from ranked MMR. So someone that is ranked challenger in ranked can have bronze level MMR in normals, and can be matched with and against them. It's shitty, but that's how it is. Sometimes you get matched with people around your skill level, others the imbalance is so great that you lose in champ select.

Pre-30s norms have both level brackets and MMR

Level brackets are separated by 10s or 5s, I think

At around level 25 you start getting matched with people who are 30+

What others said is correct, but there's also the "smurf queue". You might not be a smurf, but might be decent enough to be matched with smurfs (on mine I was matched against level 20 / 25 at level 15 and they were smurfs) and post-30 with people already having an experience in the game. They might be diamond or platinium, but their MMR can be the same as yours in norms
