AD support vs. AP support

At what times should I use an AP support vs. an AD support. I know if the team is low on AP, then I should run an AP support.

I know team comps are a factor as well, but I dont know what should go with what.

For instance a protect the carry comp gets what kind of support. I would guess AP as most have a shield and heal, but Thresh works as well.

If someone could explain this to me, that would be great. I dont ever really hear pros or even people talk about this.

I have never heard of an AD Support, what are some examples of them?

A protect the carry comp would want a disengage/peel support like janna. Though they'll often take a second utility champion (most often Lulu in another lane.

The closest thing I've seen to an AD Support is when I build Leona bruiser so I can splitpush to keep pressure up. This only works if I get very much ahead early on.

Occasionally I will rush Shiv (before going AP) on the likes of Soraka just to screw with the enemy, and it only works when I'm ahead.

In the very rare cases I have 4 AD champions on my team, I will sometimes get Zeke's Herald. This is quite effective.
