Something tells me this MIGHT be coming from the 19/3 Nocturne you played against. My question is: why would you complain of avoiding his E and ult when you're Vayne? If he E's simple use Q and E to widen the gap, preventing the fear. If he ults simply do the same thing.
Nocturne's ultimate is HIS spell, it's his most iconic ability, and the thing that really defines him. The rest of his kit is honestly exchangeable generic abilities for all anyone cares, but his ultimate is the ONE part of his kit that absolutely cannot be removed.
