When to stop split-pushing?

I've ran into so many players who think split-pushing is the be-all and end-all strategy and will do it for the entire game no matter what else is happening in the game. The enemy will be taking down our nexus turrets and they will be on bot lane splitting. What...the...HELL?

So maybe one of you more educated split-monkeys can explain...when should these robots defy their programming and stop splitting and group up with the team? Seems pretty obvious to me that at some point the splitpush needs to end, and they need to teamfight...so can you give them some guidelines for when that needs to happen?

Usually when I play top, I split until the enemy begins to group up and my team needs me or if an enemy comes to match my split.

I can't speak for others.

I do it because if you (the other four members on my team) can't handle two enemies while I'm handling three, you deserve to lose. I had a game recently where the enemy sent four non-supports after me. Meanwhile, my the entire rest of my team was getting pushed in by the support Nautilus. We probably could have won if we had a proper 5v5 teamfight, but I won't encourage the kind of behavior that causes four people to lose to a support Nautilus. Split-pushing is not a viable strategy outside of premades, and I am working on changing that.

I feel the strategy requires some fundamental basics to work and is unviable as the end all be all. Feel free to explain your issues with the strategy with some one who recommends it to the general public here.
