What push-to-talk key do you use for voice chat?

Hey folks!

I'm a UX designer working on League's voice chat (here's our old announcement if you want to check it out) and wanted to get your input on push-to-talk. If you have time to answer a couple short questions, it'll help us a ton. For all you PTT enthusiasts out there...

  • What PTT key do you typically use in other games to broadcast? What would you use in League?
  • Would you change any other keys you typically use to make room for your preferred PTT key? If so, which ones?

Thanks for your help!

EDIT: Also to clarify: you'll be able to change the key. We're interested for thinking about defaults and looking at overlap with keys that already have jobs (which we don't want to take away, it's a rough world out there).

EDIT: And for those who aren't PTT fans, voice activation will be an option. As long as you close your mouth when you breathe.

EDIT: Hey all! Thank you so much for all the info and taking the time to respond! This will be incredibly helpful for us.

I use the squiggly key (tilde key). It's out of the way while simultaneously being very easily accessible , and to top it off it's almost never used, so there's no accidental pushing while typing, etc. Imo, I don't believe there's a better PTT button on the entire keyboard.

I wouldn't change other keys because generally speaking, I don't have to. It's a key that's really never used.

I don't use push to talk and I annoy my friends every time.

I have no desire to talk to anyone in this game.

I am one who utilizes the superior form of mouse with side and thumb buttons. I have multiple voip programs, so when in-game I utilize "Mouse 4", the rear-most thumb button for game chats, and "Mouse 5", the forward thumb button, for out of game chats.

It's happening bois.

I use mouse button 4.

I tend to use CNTRL or ~ since both are accessible using wasd, but in a game like League, it's a hassle to remove any finger from qwer during a fight, so I prefer to use voice activation when possible.

Prison Monkey2/10/2018, 7:55:51 PM6 votes

none and dont bring it to league

Frolo2/9/2018, 11:51:14 PM6 votes

i'd rather this game stay away from PTT. typed chat already detracts from the game experience. voice chat would make it worse.

Foogley2/10/2018, 2:50:58 AM5 votes

I use Discord.

The Z key was my go to button since it's out of the way of most inputs.

A friend of mine also prefers the middle mouse button if that helps.

V for voice. C for communicate. T for talk.

Ahristocats2/9/2018, 7:35:28 PM4 votes

I use G in dota2 because it's default and I never changed it

I use alt otherwise but.... in league I also use alt+Q/W/E/R to level up spells

BleKz2/9/2018, 7:43:14 PM4 votes

It doesn't matter just don't limit it to only premades for the love of god

the middle twix2/9/2018, 7:43:06 PM4 votes

I use ~. its not really out of the way, it's never used, and it's comfortable to reach from the qwer standard position that most players use.

damn, i can't wait to abuse my team :D

UngEy2/9/2018, 8:13:55 PM2 votes

I usualy use the "v" key since i can press it with my thumb while still being able to utilize my other 4 fingers

wildfox992/9/2018, 7:37:26 PM2 votes

it depends by the format of your keyboard

while playing lol the key on the left of numbers (like for overwatch,it should be the " ` " for the american layout),for other games casp lock or mostly Z

Warlord Scrap2/9/2018, 7:37:56 PM2 votes

For standard across the board i use the middle mouse key. But please make it changeable. No offense to you guys you do great work but youll never make a button everyone wants to use so give us the option to change it as we see fit.

Moobeat2/9/2018, 7:44:04 PM2 votes

i usually stick to side mouse buttons for push to talk.

i currently use these keys for emote spam in league, unsure if i'd change that or just let them overlap to entertain myself by randomly flashing emotes as the conversation goes by.

Ąkalí2/9/2018, 7:44:24 PM2 votes

CSGO & Overwatch => Capslock

Its not used as default key in LoL btw.

Leonde2/9/2018, 7:53:36 PM2 votes

tilde `, currently don't use it for anything

Deep Terror Nami2/9/2018, 7:54:10 PM2 votes

Rather than use PTT, I use speech activation and I use Right-Ctrl to mute instead when I don't want anything going through.

Teridax682/9/2018, 8:26:01 PM2 votes

V usually, mainly because I started using voice chat with Team Fortress 2.

Best of luck with working on voice chat, btw! This sounds like a mammoth task for a game like League, which currently has no such thing. Cheers for gathering feedback on the Boards, as well, it's good to see more threads like these!

chipndip12/9/2018, 8:51:51 PM2 votes

I use alt since all my buttons are filled up already...

Micbran2/9/2018, 9:54:22 PM2 votes

` the only push to talk key

underscores2222/9/2018, 10:04:59 PM2 votes

When I used Ventrilo for gaming, I generally set left control as my push to talk button. The main game I was playing at that time was unaffected by using it, but when startcraft 2 came out, using left control was a major issue (select all units on screen with ctrl click) As time has gone on, I've moved to voice activate and it's gone pretty well.

But if I had to go back to using a button, especially for league, I think something like left control or left alt might be good options. Something accessible by pinky or thumb, as those two fingers have slightly less to do with using abilities.

Sploshua2/9/2018, 10:05:30 PM2 votes

I typically use (depending on the game) the T or Y keys as it is not far distance from my other keys that I use (quick to access) and I'll always remember where it is, this is also a default on most games I've played and I reckon most people would automatically know where it would be if this game was to implement it.

Edit: I think this would be more convenient if you're in a teamfight or heated situation too as you wouldn't really need to stretch your fingers across your keyboard and I'd find it'd be inconvenient if you had it on lets say the tilde or ` keys while you're trying to quickly communicate and fight at the same time.

Nosgnal2/10/2018, 2:07:55 AM2 votes

Middle mouse button. Most underrated key imo.

Hidąn2/10/2018, 11:36:24 AM2 votes

i use the CAPSLOCK key when toggling ptt, it's close to other relevant keys without being in the middle, and it's also a quite big key

BUT I END CYBER-YELLING PEOPLE ACCIDENTALLY MOST OF THE TIME

lol sorry caps

RizHippoKhan2/10/2018, 12:04:59 PM2 votes

i see most people want the tilde but the tilde is already used for something very important

zaqat2/10/2018, 4:08:53 PM2 votes

I got used to the system of OW, thus, I normally use the ''~'' key, can't find a better spot, might change it a mouse key as well.

Rákãñ2/9/2018, 8:54:57 PM1 votes

I'd personally keep the voice chat always on feature and use my voice mute setting on my mic.

If I had to use a key it would be eaither the left shift, left alt, or left ctrl key. In the order to most favourable to least favourable.

Aonerka2/12/2018, 4:24:13 PM1 votes

why not put in the control settings what the thing i want push to talk so everyone will chose the key he want i know that but why u ask for this everyone will chose it already
