Why doesn't the choose champion selection screen appear before the find match screen?

Seems to me like if Riot were to switch the order of the two it would have a few advantages:

  • Spend as much time as you want waiting to choose a champion without worrying about other players
  • Players who know who they want to play don't have to wait for others to choose their champion
  • They could factor the amount of experience you have with a champion into choosing who you are playing against instead of just general player experience
  • Riot could start the match finding in the background knowing which map you are on and your player experience while you are selecting your champion -No one else could block you from playing that champion you want to play because they've claimed it.. you are placed into a different match

Overall I believe this would reduce the time to find a match and be able to find better matching making for more fun games for all. Let's face it, right now I hate playing with new champions because I know I won't be able to play them well while fumbling around figuring them out which hurts everyone else's experience as well.

I guess the advantage I see to the current method is maybe players are more likely to explore new champions and therefore potentially buy them when forced to spend time on this screen? That might be why they do it like they currently do it this way.

But what about this solution: still force people to spend some amount of time on this screen unless they pay $10 or a few riot points any individual time to skip that? Some people probably would still spend more time than they are forced to spend on this screen exploring the new characters and it's still a win-win for all. Or forcing them to spend time here could be hidden from the players by just extending the matching time to ensure they have to wait a little bit or maybe the actual matching time is enough to get allow them to still be exploring characters and changing their mind until the actual match is found.

What do you guys think?

Oh it makes sense now. You are new to LoL.

What you are playing now is blind pick. In ranked you choose a primary and a secondary role before you enter the queue. You either get one of those roles or you autofill to a different role if it takes too long to find a match. And you get draft picks. Every team bans 3 champs. Then they take turns in picking champs.

Awesome, good to know that already exists!!

Good to know... still wouldn't this be a better way to handle blind pick?

Blind pick/normals is used for practicing, learning, having fun etc... It's best for new players since you aren't guaranteed a role. You can learn other roles instead of being focused on one. In the long run it will help you a lot if you get autofilled in ranked.

I think you are missing something.. been playing for a while, level 17.

Why should players have to wait for the match participants to be chosen before choosing their characters?
