Iron placement, but golds and plats in my games

So in the new patch, Iron was added below bronze. I also read that all unranked accounts (though I was ranked several seasons ago) are being placed in iron. However, in all of my games, my allies had either gold and platinum borders. So am I going to have to climb out of iron, then bronze, then silver, just to get into gold when those are the caliber of players I have been playing with/against? If so, I'm not sure I understand this new system at all.
