The right runes are essential, you'll want comet for added poke and added all in potential. You'll want manaflow band so that you can poke more. You'll want absolute focus for your all in potential (as refillable and your passive should keep you high hp in lane and when you all in, it should be when you're full hp, this rune gives free AP for a large portion of the game for malphite. If you need to win early you take scorch and if you need to win late you take gathering storm.

The secondary runes are very important as some people will make the mistake of choosing resolve and this completely removes kill pressure and your threat in the mid game.

You'll want to take Domination for sudden impact, this increases the damage of your ult all in, but it can also lead to more sudden plays like Flash E Q ignite if the target is low enough hp. Next you'll want to take ultimate hunter. I believe this means that your ult can get down to around 60 seconds, giving you a lot of map pressure.

Buying control wards is essential and sitting in bushes as a trap for squishy targets is sometimes a really good idea. Change to sweeper after your frostfang quest completes and buy ROA as soon as you have gold for it. If you're gold+ be prepared for your target to flash your ult or exhaust you. You'll often need to Q your enemy laner into kill range.
