Running Smite on Supports - Viable?

Hey guys. I main support, and in the past few days I've gone up against several supports running the summoner 11 Summoner Spell in conjunction with the new jungle items, namely the item 3706 (Stalker's Blade), which makes Smite slow afflicted enemies. Now, I laughed during the loading screen seeing that I was laning against a Nami running Smite, whilst I had Exhaust. I also just saw a Thresh running Smite on nightblue3's stream, which is at a Challenger-level elo. I have personally never tried it, so I really have no opinion yet. What do you guys think? Is it viable? And if so, how could it be more efficient than Exhaust? I am guessing that this is a mere fad in the pre-season.

If you don't need the attack speed slow or damage reduction from exhaust, and don't mind spending the gold on Stalker's Blade, it's a great low CD slow. That's really about it.

When a support runs Smite, you're never gonna get an objective from them because they can always outsmite your team. That's the point, objective control. The Stalker's Blade would be a bonus, and I don't really see the point, personally. It just strikes me as a waste of gold on a support who needs other items first.

As long as you grab the CC upgrade, sure.

It's only viable in high elo, where some teams may be willing to try it.

In low elo, your teammates are more likely to throw the game or just go afk when you load up with smite. That is until they see the pros use it. Then they will throw the game or go afk if you don't take smite -,-
