RX 480 + i7 6700 unable to maintain 144 fps

I have seen other posts in the past outlining a similar experience with comparable specs. I have been experiencing fps drops during laning phase and especially during team fights with my current half year old setup. With the purchasing of a 144 hz monitor, it is pretty unfortunate that fps dropping below 144 would be occurring for this setup.

I have attempted every solution I could find including heavily dialing down the startup processes, and a full system restore. The most significant post I found regarding what I believe to be this issue was back in November when Riot JxE detailed the issue and agreed that a problem existed. It is fair to say that it has been some time since then and to my knowledge there have been no other official statements from Riot or Rioter comments on this.

I really do look forward to this issue being resolved and I hope Riot feels the same way.

i haven't really notice a difference myself but this was in the patch notes. and yeah the fps issue has been around for awhile. Haven't heard from riot what they are doing to fix it either. Its like they forgot about it and continued to make skins, rewrorks, champs instead.. https://imgur.com/rzXX6ba

In addition to FPS drops, my screen freezes for 1-2 seconds whenever big team fight break out. When the freeze is over, the screen turns gray already [slayer-jinx-unamused]

gtx 750 + ryzen 1300 easily staying at 120-130 fps

you sure you have nothing in the background?

GTX 1080 windforce + i7 4790k. Also cannot maintain 144. You're not alone.

I run a RX-480 and FX-4300 (I know, I need to upgrade) but run at around 100 fps always

Have you checked your framerate settings in League? Make sure that it's set to 144fps to match your monitor? Maybe uncap it? Do you have v-sync on? With all that GPU power you can keep it on to keep the frames from tearing. Are you running fullscreen or borderless windowed mode? What's the resolution of your monitor? Are you playing on max resolution? Do you alt-tab frequently during the loading screen prior to the match?

I know it seems like I'm bombarding you with questions but it'd be easier to help find a solution if there were more detail tacked onto these posts besides telling the world about how baller of a desktop you have. That only contributes to like 2% towards finding a solution.

Other than that, I really only experience frame drops when big teamfights happen with a lot of particles all happening at once which is normal for any game really.

I could play this game on ultra/high but I choose to keep it on medium for 1) for header 2) I've always played it on medium ever since I've had a 2006 laptop when the game was still 3 years old and it handled it no problem.

As far as resolving issues though, I wouldn't go through great lengths to factory restore your PC. You might just need to check the drivers, make sure you're not running an beta version as those tend to be unstable until their release. Don't fall into the trap that getting beta access means you get access to all the hottest crazes and bleeding edge performance. It just means your testing the software.

If you are running any up to date drivers try reverting to an old version to where the game didn't drop as many frames.

The monitor that I use is a XFA240 which has freesync support. Whether freesync is enabled or not does not influence the fact that framerate dips well below 144. Resolution is 1920 x 1080 which is max, alt-tabbing surely doesn't influence fps, and I run the game on borderless (Fullscreen and windowed both see the same fps). It is worth mentioning that I had better framerates (Steady 144 when set to cap on 144, and well above 200 uncapped) early into the season Drivers are up to date, and I use AMD Radeon which is up to date. I also have my monitor connected via display port. I believe the start of these fps drops was outlined by Riot JxE in the post I mentioned above.

I have gone through the setting in League, the most stable method of playing currently seems to be capping fps to 60, setting your monitor to 60hz and enabling vsync. Obviously this undermines the point of getting an 144hz monitor, but for the sake of stability this is how it goes now.
