i just noticed riot removed gangplanks secondary (support)
i dont know just something i noticed

i dont think he could play support, so that is prob y they did that
he can play support
if you upgrade his ulti allies can move faster in it
barrels provide slows and poke in lane
his e q poke is very powerful (not easy to perform though) even without ad items
and he has decent range
Disclaimer: I've never personally played Gangplank. That said:
-He's not a tank, but his auto attack is melee range. That would make it hard to trade in lane with him against a marksman and support team. -How would he accumulate his Silver Serpents for those ult upgrades in a timely fashion without farming? -His barrel poke will steal CS -He's somewhat mana-intensive, and being forced to buy a support item/sightstone instead of Doran's Ring and Sheen early will hurt his ability to use his moves.
Gangplank is a champ that wants to get fed fast by abusing his Q's extra gold from farming and his ult's ability to secure kills from across the map. Being a support doesn't play into those strengths.
I'm guessing support GP plays very differently from a top lane GP, like how support Nasus and support Veigar doesn't farm even though it is a core part of their kits.
With sheen and a lot of support items giving mana regen, I think he can reliably poke with safety with his Q, and maybe even sustain with his W.
That said, I'm sure he's outclassed by other supports.

Upgrading ulti requires silver serpents. Silver Serpents requires farming. Supports don't get to farm. GP can't support
Poke is something tons of other supports have, as well as slows and CC, as well as range. I would never take GP over Nami, Janna, or even Soraka
Eh, not every secondary support champion is supposed to be played in the support role, but rather they can support their team while doing their main role.
For instance, Lux/Orianna/Syndra can "support" their team as a midlane AP carry by using their utility whether they're ahead or behind to aid in their team. Lux binding that fed Riven, Syndra ulting and then using her E to stun the entire enemy team, or Orianna using her shield on an ally and then ulting to catch that Zed out.
It's more about application in their main roles than actually fulfilling a specific role on the map.
I'm still irked by his update altogether, it KILLED my personal liking to play him. I do NOT. ENJOY. MINIGAMES. His barrels are just a distraction and gave him wave-clear he never needed due to how strong his teamfighting is, made even STRONGER by said barrels, as well.
I liked to occasionally go GP support pre-update and it was fun, simple, and didn't need to play around handling yet another task that may or may not actually be helpful (in the case of a bot lane, setting up barrels may be quite cumbersome so as to not take cs from your ADC which may leave you open more often to getting poked for free if not giving gold away when enemy detonates them before YOU can).
I will not play GP anymore despite him being my second, ahem, "main" when I first started League of Legends way the hell back.
I think new GP is well designed, and is very impactful in the outcome of a game. The barrels allow good GP's to demonstrate their skill, but also allow counterplay from the opponent.
I think you may be seeing things through a filter https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/nostalgia
finally
Old GP had raise morale which was pretty well suited for supporting since it didn't need gold/xp to be relevant, could poke pretty constantly with q, and could sustain with oranges, plus a global ult which is always useful. Could very well have gone tankplank and would still have that useful buff, and then throw in iceborn for some utility on his q as well.
Now all his effectiveness is much more tied to gold and also he needs to be farming for serpents to upgrade his ult so it doesn't make as much sense to play him support. You still can of course and you can make it work, but that's true of pretty much every champ. I reckon sup nunu is the way to go for those who liked old gp support, as it offers a similar experience.
