Believe or not, lol still is a freemium game. Riot need a IP sink so you waste 2~3 years to get all champions.
People already asked why some runes are so over priced. Riot said that was a noob trap and make it difficult noob players to buy them. No logic at all.
It would make way more sense to me to instead remove that cost and either reduce IP income or increase champ IP costs by whatever % riot expects a player to spend on runes (by my estimate, 15-25%)
Most of the rune cost is paid up front by new players to get their pages ready so they don't have a raw disadvantage in lane starting from the loading screen. It is seen as an annoying chore for most players and probably causes a lot of players to turn away from the game when they realize they have to spend months grinding just to be put on a level playing field. Players who stick with it at this point are still not that devoted to the game yet and thus aren't as willing to spend money, yet they are punished the hardest by the IP system because their champ unlocks are slowed to a trickle by these runes they HAVE to buy. Then, once you have your pages completed, you're probably devoted to the game enough that you'd be willing to spend money since you can now go into games and fight on a level-ish playing field, but why would you spend money on champs now that 100% of your IP income can go towards unlocks?
It makes more sense for champs to cost more so older players will be more likely to buy them, and rune costs to just not exist so new players will be more likely to stick with the game and get to the point where they are old players who are willing to buy skins and champs.
Players WANT champs, they don't really care about runes other than what they need, so set up the game so that players work for things they want instead of feeling like they're working at a grind they hate so they can get to the point where they actually get to play the game as it was intended.
