Was it because he was too weak in botlane or that he is better in the jg? Also if someone could tell me when did this shift happen.

The fact that his buckshot pushes away minions and monsters made him an effective jungler, which Riot didn't anticipate.
They're fine with him being a jungler, though, even if it wasn't their intention. Like with Maokai, they always intended him to be a jungler, but players took him top. When Vi was released, she was intended to be a top laner, and people took her jungle instead.
Graves is still a Marksman, he's just a Marksman played primarily in the jungle, like Kindred.

Rewt1 votesMarksmen are a late game class but because Jungle requires some semblance of early power if you want to be able to efficiently clear it creates a character that is strong at all points of the game and only gets stronger the later the game goes on. Its an inherently flawed concept.

Udyr is early-mid game champion... he has shield and bult in lifesteal to stay healthy in the jg. Yi - has heal and Q deals bonus damage to monsters, so he can actually jungle fast. I don't even buy pots on him in the jg.

He's probably not bad as much as he's better placed elsewhere (ideally, where he's getting more experience).

JackMcSnipeyz1 votesHi, i play Graves botlane (as my main) and he is certainly not weak, he isnt as easy to pull off but he's a high risk high reward (kinda like Draven in a sense). Unfortunately, Graves keeps getting hit because of his toxic jungling power, and instead of nerfing his jungling (cough cough - monster knockback) they keep nerfing his combat stats.

JackMcSnipeyz1 votesWell, he doesnt work with ever support, he usually works great with engaging supports, leona is probably the easiest way to win lane with Graves.
As for build, i usually start IE, into shoes (attack speed, CD or armor work great), after that PD, and death dance. These i would consider core on him, it gives you burst, sustain, and durability to get in range against mages and other marksmen.
Last items depend on the enemy, they can be the last whisper items, black cleaver, maw, essance reaver or an extra BT, it all depends on the enemies.
One tip i really use a lot in lane is to not waste smoke screen, it's such a good tool against high ranged champs it gives you a lot of extra time to get close or get out of range to hit your burst.

Graves gets almost hard-countered by some long ranged ADCs and supports. With these weak towers, you will get poked and lose tower. He is better in a solo lane. Some other botlaners like Vayne, Jhin and Kalista are pretty strong in a solo lane as long they don't get camped by the jungler.

I dont think picking any marksmen toplane is a good idea, you're robbing your team of utility picks or frontline picks.

Well, you can make other champions like Jayce, Kindred, Quinn, Nida, Teemo etc work botlane too, but is it worth it?
JackMcSnipeyz1 votesFirst of all, if it's fun then it's already a good reason to use it (as long as it's working and viable and not gimping your team) 2nd, Graves bring exceptional burst and is a very good skrimisher and team fighter with all his AoE and unique utility (smokescreen) so yea, Graves never left botlane, he's just easier to abuse in the jungle.
