Why Urgot can function as a support

[DISCLAIMER: THIS IS THE OPINION OF AN OPEN MINDED, UNRANKED PLAYER. FEEL FREE TO IGNORE THIS POST IF YOU'RE TRIGGERED BY STRANGE PICKS] So it's no secret that Urgot's current kit isn't considered flashy or exciting by the majority of the community, and it shows through play rate (among other things). But I think with a few tweaks, his kit can work in today's version of the game;

Rebrand Urgot as a support.

Before you click off thinking to yourself "Typical bronze mindset", or "lol Urgot just can't. he's terrible", actually have a solid think about what he offers for a team. We've got a shield and slow, % armour reduction (which is AOE) and an ultimate that re-positions a high value target on their team. Oh, and % damage reduction on aa and Q. This champ screams utility. So what's holding him back?

We've got a champ that 1) suffers from a lackluster late game, 2) immobile and 3) reliant on his ult, which puts himself into the fray, which isn't ideal for the damage stacking version we see today. Clearly, he doesn't function as a good adc. In any given meta, unless his numbers are overtuned beyond reason, there is always a better pick for the situation. What about top, his only other meta lane? It is his best role between top mid and adc, but it's pretty clear that it doesn't work in most team comps. So what about Support?

We've got a lane bully who excels at debuffing enemy champions by % values, and has an ultimate that switches himself for a higher valued target. However, he often doesn't survive long enough when building damage. So scrap the idea that Urgot is a damage dealer, and tweak him to function as a support. Build tanky. Build utility. focus on being a pick bot, and robbing the enemy of key stats with your % reduction on damage and armour. On paper, your adc is dealing more (armour reduction) while their adc is dealing less (damage reduction) throughout the entire course of the game. Throw in your % slow and peel/engage ult, and we have something that isn't actually that bad.

I understand that currently he's less than perfect for a support role. Yes, it has obvious flaws and counters that make laning very lacklustre. And I understand that this would be a tough case to present to high elo players (I'm unranked. Laugh it up playerbase). All I'm trying to present to you guys is a fresh look on a champion that most of us have given up on.
Urgot item 3070

TLDR;

  1. Urgot has the potential to be a decent support through his utility packed kit and some tweaks to stats
  2. While clear weaknesses do exist, there are strengths (roaming w/ ult etc.)
  3. Focus on being a stat reduction bot and piss off your adc tear up that soloq
  4. It's just an opinion, feel free to ridicule it as much as possible. I'm just looking for a fresh twist on a forgotten champion.

Urgot can function as a support

Just like a pan can function as a tennis racket.

I play him exclusively as support. I haven't studies the games to figure out what distinguishes them but it either goes spectacularly well or spectacularly poorly. My win rate with him is near 50%, though, maybe a bit below. If I could figure out his niche, I could probably raise that considerably. One thing you're right about, I can say from experience, is that he's a great, tanky lane bully. Pair him with Caitlyn, Miss Fortune, or Draven, and they rock their lane.

Exactly. That's been my experience for the most part. I just wish that adcs wouldn't give up so quickly when seeing urgot :^( I personally like to roam mid and snowball of that in my games. Proactive gameplay works wonders.

It helps a lot that when I play, it's usually with 2-4 other friends. We get away with a lot of off the wall stuff just because we know each other and play together regularly.

It's an interesting concept, but regardless, his kit is being overhauled in the rework, so we have no idea what will survive, what will change, etc. Personally i've grown to like him, but held off on buying him because of his upcoming rework. Had a few too many make me enjoy champions less.

yeah, I'm keen for the rework but i'll miss his current state. Hopefully Riot get this rework right though!

From what I read they'e looking to make him a tanky ranged Juggernaut. It sounds nifty, but sadly not sure your idea for him supporting will survive. We'll just have to wait and see. Fingers crossed his ult stays in some way though. It feels pretty unique to him.

It'd be a shame if they completely scrapped his current self. But if new Urgot is enjoyed by the community (and not immediately hit with the Azir treatment) then i'm a happy guy. We'll have to wait and see I suppose.

Yeah, he's not a support anymore. That's okay. I wasn't really expecting him to be, after his rework. (Esp. after what they did to Galio. item 3070 )

don't give up, anyone can be a support with the right attitude and teammate

It's a pleasant thought but it just ain't so. Support demands a certain amount of utility and the ability to thrive on a minimal budget. This kit does not look like it will accomplish that. If he can clear a camp, though, I'm interested to see how he plays in the jungle. That ulti will make for some horrifying ganks.

I just played a game of this a few days ago IT'S FUN pre rework start spelltheifs since your E will proc all three stacks on anyone you hit item 3071 is your core because when you max E first it will shred a total of 45% armor shred after black cleaver you go full tank

Zeke's Convergence is fun because you ult into their team and run around slowing everything after you fear them and just shoot everyone and everything while your team cleans up

I tried Urgot support. Doesn't work well with builds.

Then again, his primary build doesn't really exist either, so...
