Mana based champions have one disadvantage over energy based

Mana refilling when being at base.

I just tested Lux in practice tools. Lvl 18 without items. It takes about 10 seconds to fill the mana which means you have to wait for such long time to be ready to play , when champions like zed or akali can play immediately.

Edit: tested with items: lvl 6 (doran's ring) - 11 seconds, lvl 18 with full items - 13 seconds.

That'd definitely be a nice change. It takes ages at times for mana to get back.

I get why it has long delays early, but it should definitely take less time later in the game.

It certainly shouldn't be a disadvantage versus energy champs. The only champs that should have any advantage in fountain time whatsoever should be health or non-resource based champs.

Here comes the good question. Is the deathtimer lower than the refill timer early in the game?

DuskDaUmbreon1 votes

Depending on how early, absolutely.

after 20 mins it goes to full in like 4 seconds. OP obviously was level 18 but was minute 5 or something

I thought I was the only one! When you recall your mana takes SO long to recharge like wtf!

One trick that I have seen people do to not wait in fountain so long. wait for your mana and/or health to fill up to roughly 8/10 of the bar, then simply walk to lane. It does depend on your champ’s mana regen, but for most champions by the time you get to lane your Health and Mana should be full

Explain please, why do you think it is stupid?

Hexshot3 votes

1 question

what would happen if riot made zed use mana instead of energy for one day?

DuskDaUmbreon9 votes

That's...That's not what OP wants at all.

They're literally just suggesting higher mana regen in fountain. Or, at least, that's the implied desired change.

Hexshot3 votes

okayyyy? I am trying to make him/her realize how mana is much better than energy yet he's asking for a buff lol

his/her suggestion is just stupid with all due respect to op and that should be obvious

what would happen if riot made zed use mana instead of energy for one day? Zed would become a completely broken AoE teamfight monster if that were to happen lmao

Doesn't matter His mana still refills slowly in fountain!!!!!

Though an interesting point, I can see why that advantage is had. Building up that pool for spammable abilities should take more time than energy based units who have to carefully calculate just how much energy they need for the combo they want to execute. If energy pools grew over the game I'm sure they'd have just the same problem.

FrancisMuni3 votes

The problem here is that unless you are an Akali spamming Qs or a Kennen using E with half of the energy bar, it's really difficult to run out of energy in any champion. They have more than enough for one rotation of their ablilties, and by the time their abilities are off CD, they already have almost all of their energy back. The only thing energy does for most champs that use it is preventing them from building a lot of CDR early on to have their important abilities quickly off CD in lane. Zed rushing CDR early on to have the shuriken on a 3.6s CD and the shadow on a 13.2s CD would be a fucking nightmare.

I almost never see one of these champs running out. For most of them, you could increase a bit their cooldowns and remove the energy mechanic, and that would be it. Keep in mind that I said most of them, energy is the only thing that keeps Akali from spamming 1Q every second.

Ironically, the best energy-like system in League is not in an energy champion, but in Rumble .

  • You actually are able to burn out your resource bar without having to spam 3 rotations in a row, so you actually have to be careful.

  • You get aditional benefits for keeping the resource bar on a delimited zone. That alone adds a lot of depth to that mechanic, and rewards resource management.

Yeah, when Zed or Akali have to recall due to being out of energy, they can buy items and then get going immediately.

DuskDaUmbreon11 votes

Why would they recall due to that at all...?

Also having actual cooldowns?

Also being able to farm up without having to back at all.

More than a mana vs energy champ think, I feel like it’s an unfair advantage to resourceless champions.

Technically that’s the tradeoff for energy champions (they gain the same % energy regen in fountain but they already have very high regen). They suck at prolonged combat where mana users prevail, but are better at short skirmishes early on.

But unlike energy based champs mana champs can stay on the map for 40 minutes because they don't actually have a mana cost and their items give them thousands of mana

Between presence of mind, manaflow band, and biscuit/time warp tonic...there are literally 3/5 trees that give access to mana regeneration in lane.

It is ludicrous how little mana means to mages these days, unless you're Ryze (which is not even because of his mana costs, but because of how it's tied to his damage.)

Yeah, except that by taking mana regen or other mana bonus runes, you sacrifice other things like damage, utility, MS, healing, tenacity, magic shields, etc. In other words, energy champs and non-resource champs are at a severe advantage just in the rune tree alone by being able to focus on other advantages without needing to sacrifice resource management.

On paper what you say is true. In practice, 250 mana + 1% missing mana every 5s vs say 6 mpen/lethality after a dash, when considering that you can basically non-stop spam your spells, is kind of a negligible difference.

ChaddyFantome1 votes

I'm sympathetic to the amount of advantage energy users have over mana users, but let's not kid ourselves. Nothing u stated has been true for over 4 seasons now.

All your mana items give buttons of damage these days. item 3802 item 3003 item 3285

Ackelope2 votes

... the same is true of most energy-based champions because the regen is high enough that you can feasibly regain your entire bar in some scenarios, and they also all have a pretty easy way to regain energy by using their abilities correctly, which means they rarely run out. The only exception to this is akali i'd say, since she can only regain energy by hitting a champ with her spells, and she has some of the highest costs on the lowest cooldown.

Cancer Lux2 votes

The 10 second mana heal is that with or without homeguard(20 minute). Pretty sure past 20 minutes its like 3 seconds to top you off.

Also with or without items isnt it always 10 seconds. Fountain heals 8.4% hp and mp a sec.

Woodakoodashooda2 votes

The mana refill at fountain is so bad that you can't even teleport back to lane until your mana is nearly full because you will otherwise land yourself at half or barely above half full mana.

FSRER1 votes

Yeah it got phantom nerfed

CourtWizardAhri1 votes

Yeah i've noticed sometimes even after purchasing items I have a solid 4 - 6 seconds to just chill in fountain, but I like it this way since I get to inspect the enemies items and my teams, as well as their gameplay. Usually giving me time to just auto walk back to tower and more time to just observe the overall situation of the game mid - late game.

EDIT: Nah played a few games yesterday, 4-6 is fine if you also need some gold for a vision ward or something but most of the time it is quite the cs killer.

zed uses energy AND has a dash to get to lane even faster....... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. bonus points for mobility boots and or ghostblade

when its faster to get to lane by executing so you don't have to wait on 20 seconds of backing and mana regen. summoner 13

GFREEMEN1 votes

I dont know why they even have Energy champs. Just make then CD champs and be done with it.

Saezio1 votes

Well, on the other hand, mana means you can have a larger pool and regeneration through items whereas total energy and energy regen can't be altered, (except with new PoM, but only the pool's size even then).

Also, when you checked for the level 18 with full items, what was the game time? I was under the impression after 20 mins or so the regen increases a good amount

Edit: just checked in practice tool, it took me 4 seconds to get to full mana from 0 with lux(minute 21, level 18). What is this post?
