How to judge you're performance in game on paper?

[edit] Ha....Sorry bout the typo in the title (you're)....Sigh

Before I get flamed and reminded that this is a team game, part of making yourself a better player is judging your own performance. This post is primarily targeted at Bronze and Silver league players. I can't say I know much about gold and higher, but my instinct tells me that this post and the ideas I'm sharing here won't be of much use as the nuances of play and what it takes to win extend far beyond the ideas in this post. So if you are gold or higher, please keep that in mind as you comment on this post.

K/D/A is one metric and while important, it certainly isn't the end all. There is lots of smart play (warding, taking key objectives ect...) that cannot be easily quantified and much of that play is more important than a good K/D/A ratio.

However, in bronze, where I languish in tortured misery there are many who think going 20/15/5 is better than 9/4/15. Deaths are power to the other team. Even if you are totally fed, if you're team isn't with you, then your teammates are all easier to kill thanks to the deaths that you've fed enemy players. I run into this all the time and and often called out for a lack of kills, when my K/D/A is positive (say something like 8/5/10 and the person complaining has 10-15 deaths to go with there 15-20 kills.

Now I'm not suggesting that anyone avoid deaths and let your team die so you can write down good numbers on a spreadsheet, but I think the numbers can be a tool in evaluating our play, especially in the silver and bronze divisions. After all understanding how your deaths negatively impact the rest of your team is a lesson lost to many of the people I come across in bronze.

So it is in that vein that I've tried to quantify my own play. For one it gives me something to shoot for. A sort of competition with myself and allows me to look back (as I keep a record of all my games in a spreadsheet) and figure out, am I the reason that my team lost?

So now to my question, when calculating K/D/A, should Kills, deaths and assists all be treated the same? Clearly the answer is no. Assists aren't the same as kills. So what are they worth when trying to quantify you're contribution to the team. At the same time, is a person that's gone 20/6/0 the same as a person that's gone 10/3/0?

What about a person that manages 4/2/30?

So here's my thoughts...

The more kills, deaths and assists you make the more each should be worth. So I propose that each kill and death from 1-10 be worth 1 point (kills being good points and deaths being bad) and each assist be worth 1/2 point. From 11-20 kills and deaths are worth 1.5 and assists would be worth 1 and 20 and over each kill and death are worth 2 and assists are worth 1.5

Thus 30 kills would be worth 45 points, again same for deaths and for assists 30 would be worth 30 ((5), for 1-10, (10), for 11-20 and (15) for 21-30.

One simply enters their points for each Kills, deaths and assists and calculate their K/D/A. For example 16/12/26 would be

Kills 10+(6x1.5)=19 Deaths 10+(2x1.5)=13 Assists (10x.5)+(10x1)+(6x1.5)=19

19 kills 19 assust=38/13

Thus for the sake of judging performance, K/D would be 2.9:1

Thoughts, alternatives, suggestions?

Don't like it at all. It's way too simplified.

Firstly, it's hard to compare assists and kills. Is an assist from a jungle gank? A kill-steal? Or is it from a 5v5 teamfight? I'd consider the former assists to be better than the latter ones, as your impact on that kill differs.

I'd also break deaths down in to how many assists they gave. You're giving up more gold when you die and give up an assist than you do 1v1, but also if you die 1v2 your team must have had a numbers advantage somewhere else.

You also ignore turrets taken and other objectives.

I just don't think any simple formula can measure your performance in this game. I've had Games where I've started 7/1/7 with total team kills 15-25 (so I had 14/15 kill participation and 1/25 death participation). Very clearly I was playing an exceptional game. At the end of the game though, I was 7/6/8. It's not that I started playing badly, it's because the other team grouped mid (I happened to be the mid laner too) and so my team came mid and we got destroyed in a bunch of teamfights because it was basically a fed me versus 3 fed players on the enemy team and a support with enough assists to basically be fed as well. I still look at that game as one where I played exceptionally well - I secured 7 kills in Lane off of 2 ganks in total, and roamed for 7 assists against the enemy bot Lane and jungle - all while only dying once early (which happened to be in a 4v4 teamfight in our bottom jungle, where I drew aggro and we won the skirmish because I joined the fight). In no way should dying to fed opponents late game make me feel bad about how I played.

I think to truly judge how you played after each game, is to immediately after each game assess yourself: How many bad decisions did I make? (avoidable deaths, chasing too hard, not capturing an objective, etc...). What good plays did I make? Excellent cs, solo kills in Lane, securing objectives, securing kills by roaming, pinging the enemy jungler, warding well, etc... and just try to limit the first list and expand the second one each game.

So I would agree to most of what you've said, but there isn't any way to judge the nature of you're kills. What I'm suggesting is nothing definitive, but a guide.

so you make this statement

and then proceed to go crazy trying to give points to kills deaths and assists to come up with a new way to calculate kda. I thought this was actually going somewhere and you were going to show a way to quantify warding and all those neato things people do by taking key objectives or...well anything you mentioned in the beginning but instead the thing that you said its not all about nor the most important is the only thing you want to discuss.

The LCS has already created a formula for calculating KDA...I say just use that, they are kinda like the NFL of league so...thats prolly what we should use

I'm unfamiliar with the LCS guide for KDA, have a link?

I apologize but i was unable to find any official page that stats how they calculate KDA, however if you go to

http://na.lolesports.com/eu-lcs/2014/split1/stats

and look at the player stats it shows kda, but it also gives you the kills deaths and assists. Reverse engineer that and you will get the kda they are using every time by simply adding kills and assists then dividing by deaths.

(Kills + Assists) / Deaths

example:

Team Player Role KDA Rati Kills Deaths Assists GPM Minions Killed Total Gold Games Fnatic Rekkles AD Carry 6.92 121 37 135 399.16 10105 445740 28

121 + 135=256

256/37=6.9189189189189189189189189189189

obviously they rounded up to 6.92

I was more interested in what i "Thought" you were going to talk about, which was a way to quantify warding and other things you do in a match to create a win scenario. I don't know where to start, but we should have something, because its important.

in the spirit of what you want to do i recommned visiting na.op.gg

put in your summoner name and you will see a plethora of beautiful stats to track performance..and it calculates your kda for you :)

Match average for past 20 games 20G 8W 12L 40% 6.2 / 7.4 / 10.7 124 / 148 / 213 Average 2.28:1 KDA (Contribution for Kill 42%)

thats my summary....apparently i kinda suck
