He's generally regarded as outclassed due to his limited toolkit. Extremely beefy compared to most champs. Lacking utility outside of extreme tankiness though. When building Garen you want something that makes him a threat damage wise, stuff like Sunfire Cape and Brutalizer items, yet you also want to be durable.
I almost never see Garen but the few times I do he wrecks
He's in a great spot at the moment. In the hands of someone who knows his kit well he can make a sizable impact in the game, but he's not overpowering. Some people will still criticize you for picking him as there are situationally stronger champions, but if you learn how to play him Garen can be a great safety pick.
We were 3 fed champions in our team , talon kata and nidalee. He easily killed us, we did no damage (even with armor penetration) and he killed you in less than 5 seconds ... If he was low , he got back for 10 seconds in the jungle and came back in base to kill us.
Not overpowered
Three month old post reply... lovely.
How many levels did that Garen have on your team? It really doesn't sound like your Talon, Katarina, and Nidalee were fed if they got 1v3ed by a Garen.
If you get 1v3'd by a Garen, you are doing something terribly terribly wrong lol.
Garen has a lot of natural sustain and tankiness if he built the way I think he did then fighting a 3v1 when they're all squishy is pretty easy for a garen.
I've been a Garen main since season 1, I fully understand what a Garen needs in order to 3v1. Either that Garen was super fed, or he was matched against unskilled opponents.
Also honestly, I want this thread to go away already. Please look at how old a post is before you reply to it.
He's meant to be a newbie champion, as such he's incredibly one-dimensional and has a very boring style of play.
I Love when you get to the point of where you are tankier than Maokai with his ultimate up and just run in 1v5 use your skills and get a kill and still run out then Regen to full. Pretty solid of a champion in my opinion and I think he is actually really strong in many situations of solo que (especially because of the silence).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXwzA9bqBac When you run in and get that quad behind the tower.
Sub-par without hard cc, and fun as hell.
A thing to keep in mind with garen is that he is meant for beginners, so his kit will always be somewhat lacking in complex mechanics.
Ability based champs cant touch you, and your good mix of damage and tankiness makes you a mid laners and an adc's nightmare. Your q gets rid of all slows and speeds you up so kits pretty hard to kite you without more than 1 slow. Garen is a very dominant laner and once your opponent runs out of mana (which you dont) they're your personal rag-doll to do what you please with.
Garen is incredibly strong and while he has little to no utility in a teamfight that doesnt mean he is useless. Early game his damage and tankiness are pretty insane. If you get some kills and roam, Mid game he can become an unkillable monster thanks to his W and his maxed out Spin-to-Win lays down major DPS. Late game you are just a giant ball of tank, you rely heavily on your teams ability to properly teamfight, focus, engage, and disengage. If your team is good then you can sprint through their front line and kill or separate their backline which is pretty useful if you have an assassin on your team. Also another good aspect of Garen is the focus, you can't always just ignore him and his W reduces ALL damage and ALL CC duration by 30%.
His ult is in a weird spot compared the the rest of his kit, its not only a pretty crappy execute unless used in conjunction with ignite, but it also has pretty big shortcomings. The main thing about it is its ridiculously long cooldown, take any other champions execute and it is better then Garens. The only reason i think Garen's ult should be looked at is because of Riven's Wind Slash, it not only does more damage and scales with AD, its also ranged, an AoE, has a low CD, and offers her AD bonuses to her other abilities and AA's. Garen's ult does 175 magic damage with one point in it. I think it needs a way shorter CD and longer cast range.
He can be a total bitch to deal with when built durable. Enhanced armor/mr, 30% damage reduction, self cleanse for slows, and at level 16 his passive can heal him to full health in 50 seconds.
He may be near impossible to kill late game when building tank, but he is still insanely easy to kite and really doesn't have enough CC for him to warrant any focus.
One thing is for certain though: His ult is still unbelievably satisfying to use.
As a tank? Crappy because he has no hard crowd control and no way to initiate without just running at them. He does excellent damage but is extremely vulnerable to being kited. Overall I would say he is in a decent place but could use some kind of small change to help him make a more sizable impact later in the game. Definitely worth trying out for funsys.

Pretty swell, I don't play ranked but i usually carry hard with him consistently.
Garen is a very good champion on levelling up as well as a tank. If you want to kill any enemy champion. First use Garen's W, then use you E. At last, you can use your Q to chase up the champion of finish them up. If they are not dead yet, you can then use your ult to finish them. He can farm really well with his E and can regenerate health rapidly if you aren't harm by any other enemy champions. While his E is active, he can ignore effect caused by enemy champion's ability. Some people say he is only good at start but trash at the end. You can change this by killing lots of minions to gain money so you can build your champion's attach damage. I got a average of 17 kills on P v P and more then 40 kills on bot match.
