Serious issue on lane selecting in Normal Mode
Normal mode usually isn't regarded with much urgency when it comes to updates in terms of adding new features (or so I have felt personally). But considering the fact that the Normals are where the players come to relax from all the tensions (and stress for some) in ranked games as well as practice unfamiliar champions and try out new things (strategy, runes, masteries etc.), I think we could all agree on its importance. I have been a loyal league player since season 3 (this is huge personally since I usually don't play games at all), and while the experience has been pleasant for the most part I must point out an incredible frustration I have (and still on-going) experienced playing the normal mode.
The Normal mode is where the players just get together without the hassle (or simply, that 'extra step' depending on how one might look at it) of the banning phase and the selecting of champions taking turns. We are given the convenience of simply selecting whichever champions we please and go right to it. But this only happens smoothly under the strict circumstance where all the players are mature enough to respect the one and only simple rule that some seem to have trouble abiding: the "first-come-first-served" rule.
Everyone joins the lobby and calls out the lanes of their preference and should there be a duplicate, whoever called it first gets it. It's a very simple courtesy that most players are happy to honor, but every now and then -a lot more often than anyone would like- we witness that one player who evidently called late but refuses to respect the fact that he/she simply did not get the lane of their preference. Often you will hear them say something along the lines of "This is the only lane I can play; go anywhere else I'll be bad" or continues to argue regardless of how many people prove to them that they did not get the lane, or simply just lock-in with their selected champion and forces the player who rightfully claimed the lane to go somewhere else.
As if this wasn't immature enough already, it only worsens when they are together in a group as a pre-made. Because other players in the lobby have no way to find out who are in duos ~ quads, they will begin to 'defend' their friends by attacking the other players with insults and make false claims to ultimately take all the lanes and positions they prefer.
This is a serious problem.
While some may think this isn't too big of a deal because there isn't anything to lose in the Normals, but as a matter of fact this conflict created by immaturity damages the most important aspect of the game: the gaming experience itself. 80% of the time in my personal experience, whenever this sort of conflict sprouts in the lobby it transfers directly into the game. The player who was either forced out or unwillingly sharing his/her lane with that one or two selfish players will inevitably be unhappy going into the game, because they will not be able to carry out whatever strategy or style they had in mind going into the que. Not to mention there probably would have been arguments in the champion selection phase. He/she then would have to compete for something as small as cs, which is an important aspect in the Rift game play; not to mention they will also be unwillingly sharing champion experience points that will be divided amongst all those in the same lane, which also slows down the leveling process putting them at a disadvantage against the opponent leveling at a much faster pace (in solo lanes such as top/mid).
But unfortunately, on most occasions it does not stop there. The player who rightfully had the lane will inevitably be unhappy and the immature players being themselves, would often fail to refrain themselves from getting into further arguments. Argument breaks out between the rightful owner and the toxic player(s), which most of the time spreads to the entire team. This gets especially ridiculous when there are a group of players in a party (i.e. duos) being toxic altogether, ganging up on others. This dispute creates a situation where the team would focus more on arguing with one another rather than on winning the game and their individual game plays. Players become busy to be quick to pick up on each other's mistakes rather to encourage so they could get back up as a team, all because of that one or couple of toxic players decided that rules do not apply to them. It destroys the gaming experience.
I strongly ask RIOT to come up with a system that would largely improve this situation. I am sure I am not the only one frustrated from all these toxic players creating problems for everyone, who are far too many.
One I thought of is, forcing the players to choose their lanes in the order they joined the lobby, before being allowed to choose their champions normally. Players wait in line, grayed out until their turn comes to select their lanes and lock-in. This may sound unfair to those with slower internet connections in comparison to others, but by forcing this rule on everyone by system it will entirely get rid of potential conflicts from replying on everyone's maturity too much. Also by doing it this way we could also get rid of tricky situations where players would see themselves calling their lanes first on their screens due to joining the lobby late, when in fact there had been other players who joined ahead of him/her calling it already.
Now I know some may be thinking that this sounds a lot like the Team Builder mode, but I will tell you why it isn't and they don't overlap with one another.
As I have stated above, Normal mode is where players usually come to try new things, practice unfamiliar champions or to simply relax from the pressure of loss in Ranked Games. Very rarely would people join a Normal que with the intentions of trying a new system or methods of playing the game (meta). Normal mode in another sense is a preparation ground for the Ranked Mode and they want to practice just that. So when choosing the EU Meta laning is forced upon players, it won't be a problem to the majority because EU is what they want to play in Normals. Should anyone feel the need to try a new method of playing in the Summoner's RIft, they always have the Team Builder Mode, which is what it's intended for.
Draft Mode is not much different. Draft Mode is a lot different even though it's under the Normal Mode category, as it mirrors the Ranked Mode with the same system of banning and rotating between teams to select champions. Normal mode is where players don't have to worry about any of those extra steps to play the game. They also lack the fun and unique elements found only in the Normal mode, such as playing against an opponent with the same champion as oneself, or having myself being countered or countering the opponent hard at times from choosing champions in the blind, not knowing what the other team has chosen to play.
Ofcourse, to some this may feel like too much constraint put on players. But I strongly believe this will ultimately greatly improve gaming experience for all.
Let's face it, the Tribunal system is beyond weak, and even if players rigorously reported all the toxic players they met, what good will it do to them when their gaming experience has already been damaged? Even when the reported player gets a restriction of sort accordingly, the player who filed the report has no way to find out, and even if they were notified of the result it is usually weeks if not months after the incident.
We have to put an end to these toxic actions from the few that compromises the experience for the rest. It doesn't even have to be the method I proposed; I just would like to see some sort of a method or system that would keep these highly unwanted conflicts to a minimum, so that we won't have to deal with situations where the team morale in-game and the mental health of league players who came to relax and have fun are damaged.
