Illaoi logic, what is that?
So for starters he look, design, animations, kit it thematic and amazing looking. But the problem comes to her numbers/ratios most specifically her tentacle damage. Yes they have a slow animation, that IS NOT the point here, her E ability also lasts way too long and has nearly no visible visual with either of her skins. That is with the graphics cranked to the max, so that right there is an easy fix. They default duration should not at all be a minute, this ensures that against low to moderately skilled players she will a 100% upkeep so long as she lands it, which lets be real here she probably will against that skill level, but I digress. So here is the main point:
I did some research and backed it all up with math, yay math. So I started here to get info on Illaoi and took a look at her tentacles in particular and was rather shocked and appalled at the scaling on it: "Dealing 10 - 180 (based on level) (+ 120 / 130 / 140 / 150 / 160% AD) physical damage to all units in a line." And this is AD not bonus which on other champions wherein it states that something scales off of bonus AD only. So my next step was to hunt for other top laners/bruisers that had specifically ultimates that scaled off of AD as well and found that Gnarwas a good candidate. Again Specifically his ultimate: Physical Damage: 200 / 300 / 400 (+ 20% bonus AD) (+ 50% AP) I picked this because the of the insanely high base value of it. Which I mean just look at it! That is nice to be sure, but I digress again. Then I looked up some of the more common top lane builds, runes, masteries and the like, and then comes the math! I did the calculations at level 18 since really that is not at all out of the realm of possibility to achieve in games anymore.
Let's have Gnar go up to bat first shall we. So with his suggested Runes and Masteries he has 8.55 from that source. I then noted that really the only two common items that give easily quantitative values were Black Cleaver and Titanic Hydra (mind you I am not using the bonus on hit effect for Titanic Hydra just the base 50 damage it adds.) So we now have 55+50+8.55=113.55 totally bonus AD, now we get 20% of that total which is 22.71. Now add it to the base value at level 18. 400+22.71=421.71. Seems pretty good right.
Next up is Illaoi, same level same items, top suggested Runes and Masteries. Her base from Runes and Masteries is only 7.75, now we add in her AD damage (again as the text specifies I as AD not Bonus AD) of 145, and the same two items. 145+55+50+7.75=257.75. Now we have to find 160% of that which is 412.4, uh oh Gnar is stating to look shacky he should hang in there. Now we add in the base damage for the tentacle. 180+412.4=592.4. For one, one tentacle, let's count them together: One. And let's face it you will at some point be hit by more than one.
Now I did research into the difference of Bonus AD vs AD in abilities which is how I did my math, but by any means if there is anyone one that knows better by all means correct me, I would love to be wrong on this, trust me, I really would. I am just lost and alone in a sea of madness trying to fathom the logic behind a passive out scaling an ultimate to such a degree, I mean the base value alone nearly wins out over poor Gnar.
