Mana Regen on Mages

All of the middle lane mages I play build some form of mana regen in the form of Morellonomicon or Athene's. After the tentative balance changes, where am I going to get my mana regen? I'm actually really confused... I think these changes are just a joke. Athene's looks like it's going to be headed more toward a support role. The AP it provides and the nerf to mana regen don't make it worth buying for an AP burst laner. Morellonomicon won't even provide mana regen anymore! A lot of people are talking about the pros to the actives... but that takes so much identity away from each mage. It should matter if I lock in Ahri, Syndra, Zyra, Orianna, or Lissandra... all mages will feel the same if they're going to have reduced AP and rely on item actives.

I'm really confused... how does Riot expect any mid laner to keep up in lane? AP mages are in a really bad spot right now, and they're gonna get even worse! This looks ridiculous so far!!!
