How do you even play league of legends as a top laner?

top lane, laning phase i'm bad and almost never get any kills without another teammates help. Trades never go my way, I feel like i'm always camped and will be punished the moment I attempt to play aggressive even if I throw down wards, and when the laning phase is done I don't know what's better: staying in lane and farming and split pushing or trying my luck at grouping.
Grouping is a coinflip, teamfights go wrong often, and I end up getting myself killed most of the time. If I don't group with my team I feel like they'll just get picked and die, but if I group i'm missing a bunch of XP and gold. I need help at this point on a fundamental level, like basic HOW TO TRADE, AVERAGE DECISION MAKING IN THE MID-GAME because I legit don't even understand why i'm losing and how i'm dying most of the time.

can give godlike sustain if you get outtraded alot just back off and regen
will help as a firstbuy too, if possible with double beads but only if at least one of them builds into an item later on, ideally both will but selling one later is ok
the armor will help and your passive increases it your passive shield will be tougher and you auto counter their poke a bit.
