Leona + Graves: What counter with?

RuGu··1 votes·3,220 views

I see this combo a lot and I think it is insanely strong, Not sure if i'd rather play against a Jinx Leona or Leona Graves.

What are good counter measures to this combo?

I feel like Nami or Janna would be the correct support choice. Not sure about the adc though.

Velkoz + Varus

One thing most people don't realize about Leona is that she doesn't have much of a lvl 1-2. There are some times when she can afford to go aggro at 2, but for the most part you can abuse her early. Also, with the above lane, Varus and Vel'Koz each have very potent poke damage + wave clear. Not to mention tht Vel'Koz does a lot of damage after 6 with ult.

Her level 1 is indeed exploitable with a ranged matchup but her level 2 is quite strong. If you can poke out a Leona heavily then you can mitigate a lot of her presence. Though as someone who prefers Leona over a lot of supports, I can say with much confidence that aside from point and click poke support bot comps like Sona & Annie you're not THAT much of a threat if she has a strong ADC who can bully lane behind her like Caitlyn , Graves , Lucian . Reason being is that they can aggress on either target and take them out quickly especially if you run summoner 14 on Leona, which I do when I feel we can afford to in lane. Playing Leona honestly is all about calculated aggression. Knowing how many hits you can take, how much Damage you can put out yourself and who you can definitely kill if you commit. Another big reason why I run hybrid Pen marks on my Leona, because in the laning phase I do have the potential to kill either the ADC or support with a good eclipse or Solar Flare combo. To answer OP's quesiton about counters to Leona, any champ you can poke her with and make her spells useless. Morgana and Sivir are a very hard matchup for a Leona because they flat out just nullify her aggression. You can take skill matchup's though with any other support you're comfortable with like Thresh Blitzcrank . All you honestly have to do is dodge her E and punish her when it's down. I also see some comments where Braum is a "counter" to Leona. I honestly don't feel as such after playing them both. His Q is pretty much the ranged equivalent of her's but it's not potent to the point that her lane cannot respond, but rather respect IF you manage to lane that Q as braum and your adc helps you proc the stun. Also his shield doesnt really counter her E so ya.

Personally, I like just running flat AD marks with mine. It's good for when you jump on their carry and get that auto reset. I agree with Morg being the top counter pick support... And Sivir isn't bad. I would actually argue that Leona is a good counter to Blitz though. Thresh is a good matchup for Leo (if you can flay her E).

Edit: I do like the idea of Hybrid pen marks though. I might have to try that in the near future.

she doesn't have much of a level 1 but you are dead wrong about her level 2. it's one of the most frightening in the game.

It's not as good as you are making it out to be. Leona's damage is primarily tied to her passive. She also doesn't have the tankiness to walk out of an extended trade particularly unscathed (as with her 3+). The only time that she can really have a good lvl 2 is if you have the kill potential for an all in.

she has a gapcloser, two forms of cc, and an easy two passive procs that puts her damage well above average. that's much more than most champions have at level 2.

sure, she doesn't have everything in her kit BECAUSE SHE'S LEVEL 2. no one has their entire kit at level 2, and tankiness doesn't matter if you have the advantage and the enemy has to run, which is the reason that a leona lane should try to push to level 2 ASAP and jump on a squishy. then the enemy has two choices: run with their tail between their legs and maybe get away at low health and minus a summoner spell or two, or stay and fight because leona isn't quite as tanky as she'd be a few minutes from now, but still lose because leona has level advantage, damage advantage, and she locks you down with a snare, stun, and maybe exhaust if she feels that's necessary.

As the Leona player, I would expect not just to win, but to crush this lane. Vel'koz is squishy, slow, and has no ability to disengage anything. Leona has basically a 100% kill rate on any landed E in this lane.

The Leona player just needs to be patient and wait out your level 2 advantage before going ham.

If you want to play a poke support against Leona, it's probably Annie.

Actually, Leona came into being popular as a support shortly after Annie, because Leo is pretty strong against her. Also, Vel'Koz + Varus are capable of dealing a lot of damage considerably outside of Leo's initiate range before 6. After 6 Vel has a LOT of damage. Also, since when doesn't Vel'Koz have disengage? Aoe Knock-up/back, and a low CD, long range slow. You're also not taking into consideration that Varus has an disengage as well. I'll agree that Leo can work pretty well against Vel, but the weak link in the lane is Graves (very short range).

Anyways, I've had a lot of success with the Varus +Velkoz lane this season (17/6). And I've seen Leo/Graves a few times already.

I think Varus/Vel is a pretty interesting lane, but it's a poke lane and none of those really work well against Leona. You don't really want to run poke supports against Leona. Annie is the relatively best choice, because she can reliably CC Leona's carry to block an all-in.

The Vel'koz-Leona matchup is just horrible. Vel'koz E is even less reliable, and lower upside, than Nami Q. Vel'koz R is completely solved by Leona R -- basically, you use it and you die. Vel'koz Q isn't disengage in this situation. It won't do a thing to stop Leona if E lands. You also can't reliably put it on Graves, and even if you could it does nothing to his dash.

Varus tends to dislike laning against Graves, but it's a skill matchup. Nothing you can't handle with some outplays. The main problem here is that Leona pressure is just intense, making it hard to use the range edge Varus has.

I think it's more of a skill-matchup as a whole. Also, one of the best ways to deal with a Leona is to have a high damage support who can lay serious hurt on her ADC while she's engaging. The other thing with the Vel'Koz/Varus lane is that the level 6 is pretty disgusting. If Varus lands his ult on the opposing ADC, that's pretty much a guarantee that they are getting hit by Vel's W, E, and the majority of his R. Which is going to be at least 2 procs of Vel'Koz's passive, potentially more.

Vel'Koz E isn't that unreliable, once you've adjusted to it, especially if you lead with the Q.

Morgana + Sivir is the best counter (when Morgana shifted back to support role, it was with this combo sup-ADC vs lane made by Leona sup + bursty ADC)

Typically, the ADCs don't matter so much, and the support matchup trumps everything. For this one, you need to solve Leona E.

Janna's the easy way to do that. A competent Thresh can block with his E, although this won't be reliable in lower elo. Morgana isn't as good a counter as she seems, because Leona will still jump to the shielded target. These are the most direct ways to play it.

You can also solve the problem by having reliable counterplay on the opposing ADC, because Leona doesn't actually do anything without the ADC proccing her passive. That typically means targeted CC. Annie is quite useful here because she is a much bigger threat on her own than Leona is, and she can poke Leona down effectively. Lulu is not so much of a threat, but she can reliably block the ADC from getting anything done for a long time.

Their win condition is to massively out trade through burst, CC, and free tank stats. What ever the match up is, you are looking to keep them from using that effectively and then punishing the attempt while their abilities are on cool down.

You can use summoner 3 to greatly reduce the burst from Graves 's Q+R burst. Given that Leona's passive uses the MPen of whoever procs it, exhausting Graves would also reduce the damage from her.

In this match up you are looking to stop some or all of Leona's CC (Sivir Morgana), block dashes so either Leone cannot engage with her E or so Graves cannot close with his dash to follow her up (Alistar Thresh Draven Janna Velkoz), or to eat Graves ult / reduce its damage (Sivir Braum Sona).

Poking them down so they are too low to safely engage or better yet have to leave lane and fall behind is effective in this and any other match up that lacks sustain if you can pull it off.
