Mean players?

Hi, I'm a new player and my friend got me into this game, is the players really this toxic? Im only lvl 10 and players are already yelling at me and stuff

The real answer to this is yes and no.

I find toxicity is always worse in the lower levels. This is caused by 2 factors:

Most low level players are smurfs who know the game far better than an actual new player will
A lot of low level players are players levelling up new accounts due to them getting permabanned for toxicity on their main account

When you get to higher levels you will still have to deal with toxicity but it's usually best to ignore them and move on.

Some also have a misconception that toxicity becomes less prevalent in higher ranks, but toxicity is generally universal so it's best to get used to it

However the community gets too bad a reputation for the toxicity. There are plenty of nice/fun people in the game as well, but DOTA players won't mention them to you.

P.S. If it isn't already obvious, don't flame back even if you are defending yourself. If you flame people back, you are no better than them.

I played HON before this and the toxicity there was at insane levels that when I came here it was like nothing

To give you an idea in HON - you could taunt your enemy and if you killed them while taunted it would announce “Smackdown”

You call also spam emotes and people generally could say anything to other players without repercussion , people when titled would purposely feed or get your courier killed (used to bring items from base )

I mean if someone quit the game after being killed - it would announce “ragequit”

LOL community is not toxic at all by comparison :)

Damn, i might want to play HoN then. It sounds much more fun than getting a chat restriction for bming your opponent. (Didn't happen to me, but it happened a lot to others)

Well they are people so, yeah. But that's with everything, of course.

A new player may run into people who got banned so you may run into more people being jerks at low levels. I don't find it that bad on average.

Just don't take other players in the game so seriously. There will be plenty of times as you get better at the game where somebody for whatever reason is going to yell at you, it will happen regardless of you doing anything wrong or not, just don't "Get into it" with them. If you screw up, just say "my bad" and move on. If somebody keeps giving you shit, you can just report them or mute them.

Important: As a new player, its obvious you won't be the best in every game. Nobody should expect you to. You obviously got matched with them for a reason, and it they are a smurf and are complaining about people being bad, they're really stupid.

Yeah its a bad experience first starting out with the toxic players Its the smurfs honestly and people who get perma and start playing again.

I believe it gets better as you level up or I just started not to care

Heres a tip , play Yasuo [slayer-pantheon-thumbs] , even if you do bad people will understand that its a hard champ to play and they will be supportive. Nah just kidding , everyone is toxic , but nice at the same time. Its just those who hold it back who you have to appreciate. Its my first season playing , and let me tell you , every game is a different experience with the players on your team and the enemy team. Also dont be that guy that puts a '?' after you kill someone. No one likes that guy.

Is your friend playing with you? If so then they have a system in place to detect an actual new player and someone who already knows how to play. Chances are if you're playing with your friend then it's going to place you in the I already know how to play this game pile and you'll be with all the toxic people. New people are usually nice

At level 30+ it gets better. For now stick to playing with some friends or find some friendly players here on the boards.

I will also say, meeting kind strangers here doesn't exempt the fact that they can also express frustration so if they ever come off as stressed out, so don't take it personally. And if it made you feel uncomfortable find more players to play with.
