Why do people still think Gangplank mid is superior to Gangplank top?

His hardest counters (irelia) are permabanned in this meta. A lot of mid laners can still bully him effectively while the only person he has to really worry top about nowadays is Riven, and even then it's not a terrible matchup for him.

Picking him top is a free win nowadays.

That isn't a part of it at all. There are plenty of "squishy" top laners who are great in solo queue. Kayle Gangplank Swain MonkeyKing Tryndamere are some examples

Mid is a shorter lane so he's more protected from early ganks. Most mids also can't out sustain him in lane like some top laners can. Other then that you're right.
