Reworking Swain will likely lead to me leaving LOL ;(

I know my title is a bit dramatic, but as someone who basically one tricks swain a complete overhaul of the champion will likely lead me to stop playing. I know this does sound a bit selfish, but this is something I would like riot to take into account, because I have played LOL since 2010 and have put in a lot of hours to get better at the game. The reason for this post is because that riot doing rework will lose players like me who really don't want to invest a ton of extra time into the game to compete at a high level...like I can with Swain. I know Swain is probably a bit overtuned currently, since typically I lead in most damage done, most damage taken, while also having near the lowest amount of deaths on my team, but a complete rework will lead me to abandon a game truly have loved for a long time. The reason being that I currently have a job and other things going on in my life, unlike when I started playing in college with a million hours of free time. I know this sounds like I have a bit of an ego because I don't want to play a champion that I will likely lose a bunch with, but I am a very competitive person and when I don't have time to make myself competitive I usually end up leaving the game/hobby/activity.

To conclude, I think that reworks for some champions makes sense for a number of reasons, but in my opinion a complete rework of Swain does not. The normal reasons for a rework are either the champion does something that is completely broken, or is unplayed because their are champions that just do the exact same things but better. I honestly think that swains game play though kind of similar to Vlad and Morde being tanky mages has his own unique spin because he has CC unlikely the other two. I also don't think swain's kit is just broken like a Zac's, and it has a very unique playstyle to it.

I'm not even fully certain they will change swain, but from phylol video he mentions this was one of the champions they would completely overhaul which is why I made this post to ideally stop the change.

No offense, but if the VGU ruins the champion for a handful of one tricks, but makes him amazing and enjoyable for everyone else, thats the price you pay. And its a damn low price at that.

You think people paid attention to one trick Sions, or one trick Fioras when they reworked those 2 champions? Fuck no.

As a Zac OTP, just want to mention that Zac's rework fucked over Zac for the Zac mains and everyone else too. He has good reason to be worried about a rework. Also, talk to all the Rengar Mains and LeBlanc Mains about their reworks. They are still bitter about them.

And Fiora is a poor example, as she is quite hated by everyone that does not play her. A champion should be fun to play as and against and she is not fun to play against post rework. Fuck any kit that has % max life true damage.

I also main Zac, and Zac's rework is not like a VGU rework.

His was a mini change they clearly didnt fully consider as part of the Vanguard update (and they have since done away with class updates because of it).

Comparing what Swain will get to what Zac will get is not accurate at all to how big VGUs are. Same for Rengar and LB. VGUs basically turn the champion into an entire new champion with the same theme.

But they turned Zac from a Diver into a tank. Most VGU's don't change the fundamental category a champion belongs to. If anything, Zac's change was far more dramatic then VGU even it it wasn't called one. If they fucked over Zac so badly with a small update, how bad could they fuck over swain with a full VGU? They even mention working on Swain from the ground up. Fuck, they might as well just delete Swain and release a new champion as that's what the end result will be.

Congratulations. You found the purpose of VGUs.

They take a champion who has a strong/interesting theme but a kit that doesnt match, or is dated as fuck, and they take it and make a new champion.

IE: Sion. Galio.

Unlike Sion and Galio, Swain is still a fun and viable pick. Hell, he was just picked by Quas in the challenger series. Swain could use some adjustments, but does not deserve to have his whole kit ripped to shreds. Why not just make a new champion with the kit they want and just make adjustments to Swain to bring him up to speed? It's what I would have preferred instead of the appalling Zac rework that was just released.

There's over 100 characters to play, don't like one pick another.

Unfortunately, as you are a one-trick, this was basically an invariable outcome based on the fact that changes to Swain before you've seen them will result in this kind of reaction.

I'm not saying do or don't like him or leave, I'm saying you had to see this coming. All champs get hit with the changehammer.

EDIT: Looking back over your post-- losing is exactly part of competition. You aren't competitive if you can't handle losing. In fact, I'd argue losing is a critical part of competition. It is one of the most valuable learning opportunities you'll have. Just saying.

I completely agree that I was at a higher risk of this being a one trick, but a complete overhaul of the champions abilities is not needed...i.e. Tristana who got a rework from her original self, but still fundamentally the same. Swain has a unique role he fills, which is unlike other champions and sees play by people like me so I just don't understand the reasons for the change. I guess that is more a riot question.

He's not getting a rework he's getting a VGU (Visual Game Update) so he doesn't look like something dug up From S4

Durzaka1 votes

VGU is a Visual Update AND a rework at the same time.

IE: Poppy, Sion, Fiora, Gangplank, Galio

BALDG1VEN BOOMER1 votes

No a VGU and rework isn't the same thing, those champions got a rework and VGU at the same time because they needed it.

Swain was already apart of last years MYMU so there's no reason to rework him again unless you can link me a post that a Rioter has said it's a rework.

VGU is visual gameplay update;

And he received minor changes during the MYMU, not a complete overhaul, which he is getting.

As mentioned, VGU stands for Visual and Gameplay Update.

VGU means an entire overhaul of the champion. The rework is included.

EDIT:

I’m happy to announce that our next big VGU after Evelynn will be none other than the leader of Noxus himself, Swain. To start off, his visuals haven’t held up very well over time. Swain is supposed to be the the all-powerful ruler of Noxus, and he doesn’t really look the part at the moment. His theme is also a bit confused with his actual gameplay—he’s a Master Tactician, yet he plays more like a Drain Tank/Battle Mage.

His gameplay has also been a design problem for a while. If Swain gets behind, he doesn’t really make an impact on the game. If he gets ahead, he becomes a unkillable tank that can also output massive amounts of damage. Swain also has a lot of his power pushed into abilities and effects that enemies can’t really do anything about. Looking at him as a whole, we feel there’s a great opportunity to revisit Swain and truly deliver a champion worthy of leading one of the most ruthless and iconic nations of Runeterra. We’ll be updating his visuals to better match his theme as the leader of Noxus, as well as doing a major overhaul on his gameplay. We want to keep the “essence” of Swain intact, even though we will be completely rebuilding his entire kit from scratch.

We are still very early on Swain but I will be back with more details later in his development.

Every bit of this screams they are reworking him.

VGU is Visual AND Gameplay Update .... SO a VGU is automatically a rework for the champ .... but a rework is not necessary a VGU it can be a VU, GU ..

nobody will complain if you leave.

Swain rework will be the fail of the year...

A unique good fun champ working well going to be destroyed... While Morde, Skarner and others are dead already...its a joke.

flyingbaklava3 votes

Did you forget the Zac rework? Kind of hard to fail harder then they did with Zac. From a balanced (51% winrate) champion to the most hated champion in LOL and the most contested pick in professional play.

Yes i love the old Zac. For me was better and i was angry when they reworked him.. Also its true that some people here were claiming for zac being better in meta and reworked. Then riot did it...

But now i dont want him nerfed to the pits as always that a champ is popular.. He is being Nerfed in all the latest and future patch.

I can deal with him as great enemy and being careful but not as a dead champ more to the list.

Teemo, Yasuo are the most hated in long time too and riot didnt anything big but with zac in two months he will be trash xD

flyingbaklava1 votes

They are smashing Zac over the head with nerfs because he is 100% pick/ban in professional. Yasuo and Teemo have no presence there so no effort is made to address their toxic kits (though to be honest, I don't think Teemo is hated in anywhere near the same level as Yasuo). I just hope someone at Riot falls on their sword and admits the Zac rework was a complete failure that needs at least a partial revert (please just revert the ultimate).
