Why ban champions to begin with?

I've been banning none since and before the new draft system was put in place I'd ban champions with the lowest play rate when I was team captain (basically the same as none). Me and my Duo partners constantly get in to debates about whether or not this is a good route to go. They'd usually say something along the lines of, "ban x champ because hes op".

Heres some of the benefits of banning no champions IMO:

  • leaving a strong champ open sometimes makes the FOTM (Flavor of the month) players pick that champion and proceed to do horribly (feed meh pl0x).

  • even in the case if somebody is well versed with said champ leaving them open allows me to get more experience playing against that specific champ so even if I do sub par against said champ the next time I go against them I'll do much better in said match up.

  • thinking back to when I used to ban champs I used to just ban whatever I got stomped by. this in turn would (i know this sounds cheesy) give a psychological hold on my psyche and every time I'd even see the champ would make me become instantly tilted. After doing no bans and learning how to deal with counters its not a problem anymore. Think about GD and Yasuo.

  • FOTM Champs are picked constantly. allowing a champ to go through allows you to come up with a counter match up (if you practice the counter champ)

What do y'all think?

While I can see where you're coming from (I have a friend who's avid about banning no one), there are certain cases where banning a champion can up your win rate by a good 10%. For example:

I am an anivia main in ranked. I can play just about any lane decently, and only loose hard occasionally (to especially clean Kats, zeds, occasional yasuos). However, if I go up against an enemy fizz, I will loose. Every. Single. Time. It doesn't matter how much I try, the little fuk will just fish me at lvl 6 and I will die. So I ban fizz, because I don't want to deal with him.

What I'm trying to say is that while I appreciate you reserving the right to not ban, if banning someone will make your friend's life easier, do it.

I agree with your examples and would say they're evidence that it's possible to cope with not being allowed to ban. Still, if it ain't broke don't fix it. I don't think banning is necessarily a bad thing. It just allows another layer of strategy to the game.

I see what your saying. What are some strategies that banning enables you to benefit from?

I ban what is an inconvenient matchup for me. If I play Sion, I have the choice, ban Darius or fiora. I ban the one I really don't feel like playing against at that moment.

Another example is, if I play nami, I'm going to ban braum.

The bans make my life easier in most cases.
