A Look At Classes in League

Hey y'all :) I'm Jakco and this is my first post on here and of course, I gotta do a hefty long one

A preface before I get into this, I'm not a top player whatsoever, I'm silver 2 and that's mostly because I like normals over the competitiveness of ranked typically, I do like tryharding once of a while though ;) So take what I say with a grain of salt. I just wanted to explain the ideas behind Classes and their subclasses Since it's been a few years since riot talked about it and there might be some new faces that have no clue what I'll be talking about. Mind you none of this is set in stone as a lot of champs share bits and pieces from other classes BUT I just wanted to show all the diversity and uniqueness behind champs and classes.

Anywho let's begin :) (also sorry for any typos or grammer errors this is a long post pelase forgive me D:)

There are 5 District classes that have their own subclasses, those being

  1. Mages
  2. Controllers
  3. Tanks
  4. Fighters and 5. Slayers

"But where are the marksmen?" I hear you all saying, well marksmen are just a class, they don't have subclasses but instead, each marksman takes a design style behind typically 1 or 2 subclasses, but I'll get more into that later.

Finally, there's the Oddballs as I like to call them, they're similar to marksmen as they take themes from 1 or 2 subclasses or just the themes of a class, but unlike marksmen, they don't really have a defining class.

Alright, so what are these subclasses I keep mentioning? Subclasses are basically names given to a more specific playstyle that's under the main classes, the easiest example is Assassins are a subclass of Slayers. Alright, boring definitions out of the way let's get into more definitions! I'll go into each class's subclass and explain the overall themes they try to follow with a couple example champions (mind you I don't play everything so if I get something wrong let me know!)

MAGES: They cast the big boi spells at you, and the only class to have 3 subclasses.

Battle Mages: Battle mages are typically mages who have shorter ranged abilities and like to get into the fray of a fight with their larger or more often AOE abilities. They aren't meant to burst you, instead, relying on sustained damage to widdle you down while also being tankier in some ways than a typical mage. Some examples of Battle Mages are - Swain Vladimir Anivia AurelionSol and Ryze

Burst Mages Burst mages are what you typically think of when you think mage, they like to set you up with their CC ability then combo you into the ground, most but not all have no mobility, relying on just raw power to destroy you from a distance so you don't smash their tiny health bars. Some examples of Burst Mages are - Lux Annie TwistedFate Zoe and Leblanc

Artillery Mages Artillery mages is the smallest subclass in the entire roster, these champs aim to poke you down from long range and don't typically rely on their CC to set up their combos. They have no mobility and will be destroyed fairly easily if jumped on. The only Artillery Mages are - Velkoz Xerath Ziggs

CONTROLLERS Are less about big boi damage from casting, instead, more about protecting their allies or setting up fights

Enchanters Enchanters are your very typical heals and shields support, that are typically pretty squishy but have a lot of tools for keeping their allies alive while keeping the enemy away. Some examples of Enchanters are - Janna Soraka Nami Sona andKarma (though if you build her right she can be a burst mage too hehe)

Catchers Catchers usually have some sort of way to engage a fight while usually having some protective ability(s) to help out their team. A lout usually have that 1 ability that sets up everything and if they miss it they've kinda screwed up. Some examples of Cathers are - Ivern Blitzcrank Zyra Bard and the only not support focused catcher Neeko (which yes could be argued burst mage but I feels she's more focused around deception and catching people then just straight up bursting them)

TANKS The big beefy bois, They like to soak up that damage and keep you in place while their team does all the damage

Vanguards Vanguards are the big tough peeps who like to start the fight, they typically have a lot of engage durability, and large AOE team fight starting abilities that they can then keep you held down while their team crushes their targets. Some examples of Vanguards are - Malphite Leona Maokai Ornn andZac

Wardens Wardens are more the tough peeps that are more on the defensive side, they usually have some sort of ability to protect their team or to keep the enemy from getting to their team. Some examples of Wardens are -Braum Taric TahmKench Nunu (though he's a little weird as he's also kind of a vanguard) and Galio (though he's also got some bits of vanguard, and battle mage if you build him right heh)

FIGHTERS These bois like to get in there and well... fight lol. They've typically got a mix of durability and damage.

Juggernauts The true raid bosses of league, these champs are slow with little to no mobility (typically super short dashes and MS buffs) have almost no cc (mostly MS debuffs or brief disruption skills like flips/ pulls or knock ups) and pump out HUGE damage if you let them. Juggernauts can also be split into 2 different styles or I guess sub-subclasses, those being Ability Focused, and Auto Attack Focused. Some examples of Ability Juggernauts are -Urgot(No I wouldn't classify him auto focused as he's SHOTGUN KNEES are technically an ability no an empowered auto attack) Aatrox Illaoi Skarner and Mordekaiser And some more Auto Attack focused Juggernauts are - Volibear Nasus Trundle Udyr andShyvana

DIVERS As the name suggests these champs like to dive into a fight(with no way back out), typically singling out a target(but sometimes multiples) to either blow up themselves or set up for their team to blow up. Some examples of Divers are - Camille LeeSin Hecarim Diana andRengar (Yes the cat is seen more of an assassin BUT and I'll mention this later, a true assassin has no hard cc and has reliable ways of getting in and out of fights, Rengar has both hard CC(a root) but also can really only get into fights and not out)

SLAYERS These bois want to get in, kill shit, and get out with as little harm to themselves as possible.

Assassins You love them, you hate them, you love to hate them. Assassins have one goal, get in, blow up a single target, get out. They can(but not always) have fairly high mobility and a lot of damage, mainly wanting to kill the squishy target on the enemy team. Some examples of Assassins are -Zed Evelynn Akali Kassadin andTalon

Skirmishers These champs just want to kill anything, having a mic of durability to last in fights to go along with their damage. Skirmishers have some form of cc or just raw attack speed power. Also, they'll either have a focus on Auto Attacks or Abilities but all are very good at split pushing. Some examples of Skirmishers are - Yasuo Ekko Tryndamere MasterYi andRiven

Oh man, this post is getting long, I swear I'm almost done! Please don't go yet we've still have a little more to cover.

Marksmen

This is such diverse cast of champs, while yes the main points of these bois is the ranged auto attack damage while typically being squishy. Though as I said, each champ takes different pieces of other subclasses to become their own unique thing. Jinx and Caitlyn are probably the most "Marksmen" out of all the marksmen in the roster, they sit back and auto you for their damage. then you've got champs like Vayne and Twitch which are a lot like assassins with their stealth and super high damage. Kaisa is like a diver with her ult. Lucian and Draven are like skirmishers with their more get in the fight and fuck shit up sort of playstyle. Jhin and Ashe are like Catchers with long range CC set up. And my fone of my favs Kindred who's like a Controller but also Enchanter because of her ult. Anyways as you can see Marksmen(/ADC) are way more diverse then we give them credit for!

And finally, let's get to the Oddballs These champs are just kinda a mash-up of several classes and subclasses. I'll just list everyone that Riot or I think are in this set. If you think about these champs, they are almost nothing like other champs and have their own unique way of playing the game -Azir Chogath Elise Fiddlesticks Gangplank Graves Gnar Heimerdinger Jayce KayleKayn Kennen Nidalee Quinn Singed Teemo Zilean

Anyways I hope this was interesting and fun to read and thin kabout the uniqueness of classes in League. Or you just hate me and think I'm stupid for writing this post.

Either way have a lovely day/night and I'm looking forward to discussing this i nthe comments :)

I'm surprised this post went under the radar, it's a nice summary of all the classes.
