Support as a Role

Hey guys, so I'm a support main, and I'm actually really bummed about the nerfs to Ardent.

Now before you all lynch me, allow me to explain. I never believed that Ardent was balanced. I honestly hated feeling like my favorite champions (I prefer playmaking supports personally, such as Thresh and Brand) were completely outscaled once the enchanter support managed to get one item. But I did like that when I played an enchanter support, I felt like I contributed not only defensively, but offensively to the team. Ardent Censer in it's "op" state allowed itemization towards damage while still specializing in defense as an Enchanter support.

My point is that while Ardent was in no way balanced with the other support items, I don't feel that the power granted by an Ardent was for instance over the top compared to the power spike of an IE or Void Staff. The problem lies more with the fact that other supports did not have a similar power spike. I personally feel that instead of nerfing Ardent into the ground, other items should be brought into play that create similar power spikes on other support champions. For instance, if instead of Zeke's having an effect on ult, you made it an active effect, gave it like a 60s cd or something, I think that it could easily compete with the Ardent Censer for power.

Honestly, the issue with supports in my opinion is they are too tied to the ADC. Very few of them can effect other laners the same way. Using ardent as the example, something that always urked me was it didnt help tanks, assassins, mages the same way it helped the one and only ADC. We need more item 3190 item 3107 style items (not necessarily actives) that are strong and can counter play the enemy similar to tank items.

Enchanter and Wardens need a class rework in general. They're too heavily reliant on active item effects instead of their own kits. coughRedemption/Locketcough

The problem with Ardent is that it double-dipped. It was a powerspike for the ADC when you got it, but the ADC also got a 2nd powerspike off of their own item purchases in the same timeframe, which stacked with the Ardent Effect. Even if zeke's had a good active that worked for playmaker supports, Ardent was just able to increase DPS in a way that really has difficulty being matched.

That's why I love the change to it. It's been nerfed, but is still an overall gold-efficient item, that still allows for you to contribute offensively. I think its still a great first-buy for enchanters if they're tied or ahead, and still helps you feel like you're really contributing offensively. I think the nerfs were enough to enable other support options to compete with it, but didn't take away it's identity as the aggro-enchanter main item.

So I dont feel that a two person power spike is a problem in a duo lane... Power spikes should ideally occur together anyhow... The problem was that enchanters were the only kind of supports that could offer that double power spike, due to coin's increased gold gen and the fact that tank supports literally have no significant offensive option (Zeke's being tied to an ulti really limits its effectiveness imo)

Or riot could just let ap supports (not thresh) die since they are "toxic and unfun to play against" , I bet if riot does do that they are going to have that as their reason..

No I am not that against ap/playmaking supports, I do think they can sometimes be healthy for the game when players feel like they are unable to contribute (well.. i still have beef against ap supports since they help keep tank supports out of meta except for galio atm with his ap ratios) But thats not their fault thats just tank supports not having enough impact.
