Mordekaiser and Shyvana

Long story short, I'm still fairly new to LoL and am trying to find champions that fit every role. So far I do a decent job with Ezreal ADC, Leona Support, and Shyvana Top, but my best character/role is Shyvana Jungle. I just lover her kit, since it fits my playstyle very well. Now, the only role I can't figure out is Mid. I don't know how to play it, every time I do I end up unintentionally feeding, but to add insult to injury, I can't find a champ that I like for Mid. Recently I saw someone wreck me with Mordekaiser, so I decided to look into him to figure out why his early game at least seemed so good. It turns out that it looks like a lot of his kit is similar to Shy's, with a basic-attack-enhancing Q, an AoE damage W, and an E that's great for poking and wave clearing. The ultimates are different, but I'm sure it can't be too hard to get used to one skill with some practice. So my question is: is Mordekaiser a good champ to pick up if I'm good with Shyvana? I don't plan on going into ranked matches any time soon, and really enjoy just spending time with friends. But I want to find a good mid laner, and want to know if Mordekaiser might suit my playstyle, since Shyvana does.

I can see Mordekaiser being a good learner's pick, and it is similar to Shyvana.

The main problem Mordekaiser has is short range and immobility. He has a lot of damage and defense, but his spells don't have very long range and he can't get into range if his opponent doesn't want him in range. But he has solid dueling strength, can take a beating, and his ultimate is a lot of fun.

Just a side question, have you tried Xerath in mid lane? He's a pretty strong lane mage

Thanks for such a quick response! To answer your question, no, I haven't tried Xerath mid yet. I know he can be good, but I think my real problem is that I don't have the mindset of a mage yet. I'm so used to tanky characters [Ezreal being the exception] that I'm always so tempted to just run out into the front lines, which is my biggest weakness. I know that I could learn mid lane easily if I just figure out how to be correctly passive, but until then, I want to wean my way into the role with something that gets the job done but still accommodates my playstyle. I'm really just looking for a "learner's pick" as you so accurately put it.

As for Mordekaiser himself, thanks for letting me know about his weaknesses. I picked up on those facts a little bit when watching some gameplay footage. I still think that I can work with them though, since I know I can support the team even by being a lane bully and shutting down the opposing mid laner by denying them farm. Immobility may be a problem for me, but as long as I have the tankiness and sustain to stay in lane and hold my own against ganks and duels, I don't think I have too much to worry about.

I do have to ask in response though: what is Mordekaiser's late game like? I want someone who can scale decently well into the late game and still be viable, on top of having a decent enough early game. The sucky early game is what turns me away from Vladimir. And while I'm not expecting Mordekaiser to have anywhere near as good of a late game as Vlad, I still don't want to cost my team a victory by falling off late game and making it a 4v5.

Mordekaiser's late-game is pretty solid. He's one of the easiest mages for last-hitting minions, so even if you get behind in kills, you'll catch up with cs at some point. As long as he's built with a proper mix of AP and defense, he'll be a late-game juggernaut, like the AP equivalent of the new Sion design. Except without CC.

And if you start really enjoying his playstyle, I suggest you invest in Spell Vamp quintessences.

If you want a tanky midlaner, how about Ryze? He's cheap and kind of easy to learn (remember, just QEQWQRQEQWQ [disclaimer: combo may not be correct]), works mid and top, and his mana scaling allows him to build very defensive and still get tanky.

I always suggest Diana to people looking for a new mid-laner. You can try her in Jungle too.

If you're already having troubles mid, I'd suggest avoiding melee mids.

MORDEKAISER NUMERO UNO!!! HUE's aside, Morde is a better top lane in my opinion, but if you want an easy midlaner, go with Swain

Well, as they say....

MORDEKAISER ES NUMERO UNO HUEHUEHUEHUEHUEHUE

Mord can be a decent pick but honestly, I'm not sure you'll find a strong mid laner that resembles shyvanna. I guess you could always go towards melee mids such as Zed.

If you want a somewhat tanky mid laner, I'd second Diana. She has a nice shield that also damages for those pesky assassins that jump on you, a AoE slow, and a ranged poke, which later let's her engage on people if landed. She can duel most people if there not super ahead of you and with the right build. Just have to practice her Q.

Swain is another good one, walk into a team fight with your R up, and walk out like a boss.

If the enemy midlaner is a assassin or a short range mage, why not try shyvana against them? She's tanky enough to take a few pokes, and she can push her lane pretty fast to go help other lanes if needed, or push lane to keep the enemy mid laner there. Just make sure to ward ;)

Mid-lane is dominated by early power-spikers, assassins, mages with CC-heavy kits, champs with weird abilites, etc. It's nothing like toplane. The likes of Morde are probably better on top to be honest. Melee champs are usually at a disadvantage in midlane. I beat an Ahri with Fiora once in midlane, but I haven't been ballsy enough to try it again because melees just usually don't do well. This is another story if you have a 1-combo-1-kill champ though -take Fizz for instance. He give most mid-laners hell because he safely moves over everything, including turret zones, and bashes your face in. Zed and LeBlanc did well because of their Silence. It was okay for them to get close. So on, so forth. In my Fiora game, I relied on high damage and surefire gap-closers. After a few exchanges, she couldn't outdamage me. I had all the midlane kills.

Other champs like Shyvana though, would be crippled in midlane because there's the likes of Heimerdinger which completely shut her down. Shyvana can't even safely farm under turret. You will lose lane in less than fifteen minutes -if it takes that long. Shyvana's E damage is also nowhere near powerful enough to take out his turrets. Other traditional fighters like Jarvan and Tryndamere would also likely have problems. Garen might get away with it because of his silence, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I haven't tried him, but Maokai might be of use midlane. Fizz is usually good for ballsy players. Zed, Katarina, Akali, assassins are usually good, but you'll need to learn patience with them. They're up close and personal like fighter, but they require a mindset unlike any other champion class. I've played every type and nothing comes close. Morde may be good, but just be ready for some tough fights. Yasuo is probably your best bet to be honest. Of all the fighters he not only does well, he typically excels in midlane. It's quite odd actually if you compare him to other fighters. He outclasses most of them. You'll have to practice a good bit though and don't expect him to be available on ranked as he's usually banned.

I'll just list off the mid laners I like to play. Mid is one of my backup lanes (I'm jg/support/mid=adc/top), so I only use comfort picks mid that I used primarily in Season 3.

Syndra Syndra is probably one of the best champions for low elo mid laners. Her burst is stupid, she has few weaknesses other than being fairly immobile.

Zed Too mechanically complicated. Has some rough counters. Stay away from him.

Talon Oh my god I love Talon. He has a very specific playstyle, but he has some stupid burst and cleanup potential. In low elo/level, it's extremely easy to pick people off just by roaming. Unfortunately, Talon suffers from mana issues (low mana cost spells, but small mana pool), so generally start crystalline flask and farm/be safe until you can get your brutalizer or tiamat.

Jayce He has probably one of the cleanest power spikes in this list. Just make sure to know your limits when you go into Hammer Stance. Buy Tear first, then all ArPen and AD. Go nuts.

Yasuo He's fairly demanding mechanically. If you're out of position with him, you might get cc-locked and punished for it. I probably wouldn't recommend him unless you've gotten used to his mechanics in custom/bots.

Quinn She's a little gimmicky mid. I'm used to her adc/top, but in certain matchups, she can dominate some melee mid champions and other champions who are weak early. Quinn's fairly easy to play, and she turns into an assassin late game with her double-Harrier combo and her AoE ult execute.

I hope this helped. Feel free to add me and we can try out some bot games so you can see which playstyle you prefer. Let me know if you have any questions. :)
