Mini map into full sized map

I was thinking that it might be beneficial to have the option to make the mini map bigger. What I mean is bind a key so that when you press it it makes the mini map appear on your screen kinda like the way tab brings up in game stats. I don't know might be a dumb useless idea but I think it might be helpful to some players. What do you guys think?
