New UI has a poor user experience
I like the direction. The graphics look really clean and it generally looks very good, but there are a few issues that are really throwing me for a loop after converting from the old UI:
- The scoreboard needs, at least, champion names. I personally have a hard time recognizing character portraits quickly, so it takes me a really long time to find what I'm looking for on the scoreboard.
- Requiring the user to hover over the champion portrait to mute a player has a couple of issues: a) It makes the feature difficult to find for new players (possibly the players who need to be able to mute other players the most?) and b) it adds an additional, needless step to muting players (i.e. why make players do in 3 steps what they used to be able to do in 2 steps?)
- The champion statistics window is impossible to read quickly. The symbols are too small to be easily recognizable. In a popup window, there is no reason to not have text indicating what the numbers actually mean. It took me 20 seconds to find what my cooldown reduction was when I was considering buying a fiendish codex, and now, after the game, I couldn't tell you where in that window that statistic was represented.
- The animation for abilities coming off of cooldowns makes it look like you're oom. I played three games tonight and there wasn't a single time that I saw that animation in my periphery and thought, "My ability is off cooldown." On the other hand this might actually be a good thing because it forced me to pay attention to how much mana I had before doing things, so that I didn't needlessly back off when I thought I was oom because of a cooldown coming up.
- It would be really nice to be able to switch the side that the inventory is on. I'm sure I'm not the only player that has been playing for years and is just too used to it being on the left to remember to look on the right, especially in a high pressure situation like a teamfight. I guess this is similar to the reason why you gave players the option to swap the inventory and mini-map in the old UI.
It seems like a major design characteristic for this UI is simplicity of presentation, i.e. give the user exactly the information they need and no more. While I agree with this general idea, I think that most of the issues I listed come from being overzealous towards that goal. Specifically, it seems as though someone decided that having text in the UI is a bad thing and tried as hard as possible to eradicate it. Certainly, too much text can easily become difficult to comprehend, but a complete lack of words can be just as bad for some people, myself included.
I hope that someone on the dev team might find this criticism helpful and constructive. Happy farming!
Edit: For readability.
