What am I not understanding about Volibear support?

I occasionally play ADC, as I enjoy all the roles in the game, but when I lane with a Volibear support I just get confused. It feels like they have awkward engage timings and never check to see if I'm healthy enough to fight (though I understand that may be a player problem). I do admit I've only played with a few Volibear supports, but I would like some insight from those of you that play with them often/play it often yourselves. It would greatly help me the next time I get matched with one.

I jungle voli and have dabbled with support voli in the past.

Voli will be a heavy engage support that is very binary. In a voli player mind the perfect time to go in is based on 2 conditions. Are the QW abilities off cool down and is the enemy at 50% health or lower. With W being an execute these are literally GO conditions for the player. They are counting on safe backup from you (some damage for the execute) but they are banking on the passive more than their lane partner.

This is a high risk lane style and if it does not snow ball becomes almost useless later in the game. The voli player is going to bank on the mistakes of the enemy instead of the skill of him self. Which is why you are seeing this in bronze level of play.

Voli support is not really a thing. Play conservatively till the support engages and do your best to follow him up. Try to do do one sided poke so the voli player does not run into 2 full health targets. Out put as much damage as you can safely , when the voli charges in. Expect that the voli is going to take the kill so do not over extend, your gold is going to come from lane CS and bouncing the wave into the tower.

I end up playing Voli a lot in ARAM, so I can't really speak to the mechanics on SR, but most of the time I never engage unless I know my team can handle it. I'm not gonna chase an enemy and flip them to a team that's barely alive. I must be something with the people you play with, or maybe I am missing something about Voli.. lol

some people pick voli support so they can get fed and carry, or so their thinking is, so they can get a bit greedy and go aggro sometimes at the wrong time.

Hello there,

I'm a support main, although I don't play volibear support outside of normals, I can tell you that he is very similar to braum when it comes to engage timings. This means that they SHOULD be building tank as they have no way to engage other than charging directly at the enemy. Many of them will overestimate their passives as well and overestimate their execute damage. So if you're playing with a Voli support be prepared to go all in or let them die. It's something that many adcs and supports in lower elos don't quite seem to understand: that you don't HAVE to follow up on all ins by your laning partners. Sometimes you have to make the judgement call and let them die for making a bad play (also be prepared with the mute button afterwards as solo qing in the duo lane can be the most toxic experience when playing with others that do not play at your speed).

Once I got out of low gold elo I stopped seeing voli supports. I honestly can't remember the last one I had.

It's simple. Voli is an early game God who at lv2 should all in engage. He should be hitting minions to keep his W up and bite anyone that comes close. At 2 hw Qs in, flips and bites adc, and insta wins the fight. If they focus him he just pops his passive and doesn't die.

Voli top dominates early levels to easy snowball.

they are usually reckless with their play style, because for voli, high risk yeilds high reward. And honestly, voli isn't really support in my opinion. basically running a kill lane
