The Ranked System

I'm sick of getting paired with bronze players that have no idea how to end a game. I don't believe I necessarily deserve bronze or silver. However, I've never made it to gold. I'm not claiming that I deserve challenger or anything, but I sometimes actually believe that my teammates are robots, and I'm just playing with Riot's autobots. I thought this was a team based game? Why is it that solo queue is all about individual effort? I'm a toxic player admittedly, therefore I don't enjoy talking to my team. Yet, muting players and not communicating doesn't seem to be effective. How can I win a game if my team doesn't understand what a Nexus even does? Please fix this broken ranking system, it's awful. I most definitely don't belong here, and I'm sick of the bronze community.

I'll share my story as I was a silver ranked player in season 2 and managed to get Gold in season 3 & 4 which was my goal. I don't have the time to play my way up to plat/diamond and I'm happy with the Gold status plus getting my Victorious skin reward :P.

1.) Regardless of the game's current state or your champion role's get in the mind set of always (i mean ALWAYS!) think about what you could do for the rest of the team. If you can win your solo lane, go and gank that bot lane that is falling behind or at least provide pressure so they can get even on cs. If you are playing support, go ward that mid lane so that your aggressive mid laner can make that 1v1 play safely. Every two (2) mins I would ask myself this and I found that by supporting my teammates in that way I was winning more games because as a whole everyone starts to play better.

2.) Lead by example, you don't have to talk much but when you do make sure to provide something meaningful. If you have played a matchup before and you see your Top laner struggling in it provide a quick "Man you can win, don't worry about it for now and try this, as soon as I can I'll go gank/ward/babysit/(insert supporting action here)". If you can make meaningful contributions people will follow. You would be surprise how many comebacks you can make when you can inspire and reassure teammate that they can overcome difficulties and work together.

3.) Losing is part of the climb. I'm actually on a negative ratio this season, don't let that get to you. If you lose, always (I mean ALWAYS!) assume your rivals are playing better than you and use that as motivation for getting better. Its a team based game, but in reality all you can do is try your best so make that effort count. Also don't pay attention to negative people or messages and instead focus on the positive interactions.

4.) Don't surrender. Even in losing games you can learn a lot more than when you are winning. Do a honest analysis on why the rival won the lane, what was it that she/he did that you did not expect? can you now use that knowledge to your advantage next match? if you go in again against the same player would you be able to win now? That's the mentality of professional athletes and that is why they improve and make it back to become champions.

5.)** Have fun (genuinely!)**. Sounds dumb right? Guess what? it works!. Even if you are sure your team is going to lose and everyone is getting rekt, laugh about it. If you can keep yourself positive and go back to point 1. (always helping others regardless of the match' status) your win/lose ratio is bound to go up. Remember, chances are next match you will be queued with "that" top laner again. Tell her/him a simple "Alright lets win this one!". Everyone has bad games every once in a while, I'm sure you do as well so trust in your teammate and provide a field in which everyone can play to their best.

If you have the skills (as you say) of a gold player, all you need is a good philosophy and sticking to it. I assure you that you will get to your ranked goals if you make an honest effort about it.

I love this feedback.

Lax - definitely sympathize with your situation. After placing into S1 this season, I dropped to S4 and then subsequently yo-yo'd between S1 and S4 multiple times. It was incredibly frustrating and led me to feel pretty bad about my teammates and my play, oftentimes putting me on tilt (which we all know is never good).

Eventually I started to realize this sort of negative mindset was affecting how well I played (you know, thinking I'm DLift and trying to make that epic 3v1 play but getting deleted instead), and also more importantly, bringing my teammates down with me at times as well. It's a lose-lose situation.

This is why I love Cremina's feedback. It's basically the approach I took after dropping to S4 for a 3rd time, and since then, I've managed to climb up to G4. It helped me put things in perspective, and focus on the things I should be doing to help the team win the game - even when from behind. I can't tell you how many times my team has had bad laning phase, only to turn the game around in teamfights, or giving up a possibly game-ending 5th drag, only to patiently ride it out then execute the perfect tf and win. And I think a big part of it is due to trying to keep my team's spirits up and head in the game even in the face of negativity (rather than feeding into the cycle of negativity myself).

We're not going to win all of our games obviously (and like Cremina I had a negative win ratio for most of this season too), but I think the mindset you go into a game with and the attitude you maintain during the game (especially in the face of adversity) has a huge impact on the outcome, both in terms of whether you win or lose, and even after you lose, how you internalize that loss and bounce back.

GL man. Don't give up, and keep your head up. I believe.

Why do I read this and the only thing that pops to mind is a giant "WRONG"?

It's simple, low elo isn't about who's actually better. It's about who has the biggest loser. You could have flawless mechanics and impeccable objective control but the one thing you can never have is control over the 4 dead weights you have. Now I was thinking the same thing as the OP and someone made me realize something that changed my whole game up. What if you made your opposite team dead weights? That's right, doesn't matter how much you earn, it's about how much you DENY! Take dragons not because it makes YOU stronger but because it stops the enemy team from being stronger. Don't focus only on CS, focus on making your opponent lose CS.

Low elo isn't about gains, it's about trying to put the other team in the red.

Akeydel2 votes

Okay, so using that mindset, I'll revise number 1 for you:

1.) Regardless of the game's current state or your champion role's get in the mind set of always (i mean ALWAYS!) think about what you could do to set the other team behind. If you can win your solo lane, go and gank that bot lane and stop their ADC from becoming a threat, or at least provide pressure so they fall behind on cs. If you are playing support, go ward that mid lane so that their jungler can't get any money from ganks, and their mid laner can't get kills. Every two (2) mins I would ask myself this and I found that by setting my opponents back in that way I was winning more games because as a whole their team is doing worse than ours.

Personally, i think this is a rather vindictive way to play, but hey, if it helps it helps.

MMR =/= LP/ranking you can be bronze 5 and still play in a room full of gold players. its just that by the time you raise your mmr level to the gold level you will already have ascended through all of bronze and some of silver. so in fact if you are being paired with bronze players you should have no problem beating them 1v1 and consistently win your lane and come out of matches ahead of your opponent at every step, with at least a 50% win rate overall, because assuming you're in a room of 9 other pants on head players, if you are correctly wearing your pants on your legs, it'll show.

keyboard warlord1 votes

So I need to beat bronzies 1v1 and just simply hope I win, considering that the players with pants on their head probably don't want to win or are incapable of winning? All it seems like is that I have to carry 150% harder than usual. Why must it be that way?

EDIT: I just want to win games consistently, but I'm not Lustboy.

just look at it this way, by crap luck you've fallen down, whatever, you've been cheesed or cheated in some way, you're there now. but you haven't changed, so that makes you a sleeper skilled player among basically children, that gives you a huge edge. now i cant say to what degree you're better than they are, but if you truly think so it would show after several games, you should be snowballing, denying them, and just have a general gold lead throughout the stages of the game. the only thing that could stop you from winning your matchups is say a jungler from lane gank, or perhaps you just lost a crucial team fight because your sejuani ulted in the wrong direction, yes it will result in a loss, but your KDA and gold should still be higher than your opposite laner.

and what im saying is just by constantly being ahead of your laner, you will eventually rise again should you keep playing. MMR only says who you play with. the LP system IS broken so you just have to live with it, and you will rise through it if you can make a difference in the games you choose to play.

Adding onto this. Firstly, don't be toxic at all, ever. Second, never afk( I afk once every 100 games because of firewall errors or blackouts etc) if you're gonna afk then stop complaining about afkers. Third, find a duo partner who won't afk or be toxic. This will decrease your chances of getting toxic players and afks on your team since now you only have to worry about 3 players being "bad" on your team and the enemy has 5 people who might be bad. Finally, admit your mistakes and realize that you're doing something wrong. If you can't admit that you're not as good as you could be then you're wasting your time. Once you hit gold rank players will tell you how to improve more often.

its not always a good thing to duo queue, its only good if you're already playing at a gold or higher level, and you're trying to rise quickly from bronze/silver. otherwise if you go in with a friend matchmaking will notice and will raise your MMR level to compensate, thinking you'll be working together and communicating better and should perform better together. you two will end up against tougher opponents. its sometimes more beneficial to remove that 1 potential toxic person on your team, but not worth it to play above where you belong just to play ranked together.

Oh. Something I noticed. Your builds are also kind of weird. Like Cutlass on a Lee Sin.... Never build that on him. He doesn't need it. You get something like Hydra, Randuin, Sightstone if you're top lane. Jungle Lee would be more like, jg item, sightstone, Randuin and LW or something. Also, Banshee is better on him than Spirit Visage.

Also, you don't need Warlord mastery on Sejuani either. She doesn't need AD. For Zed, usually what I see people do, is BotRK/Youmuu/LW. BT is more for mid/late game and Phantom Dancer isn't need on him either. I also noticed you have Mercurial. Not bad vs CC comps, but you don't need to complete it. Waste of gold. Upgrade the Silversash as last item. After getting QSS, just focus on your other items before upgrading it.

Three major things that I typically see happen on lower skill players that don't understand what they're doing wrong:

Bad builds. They need to work on coherent builds. More importantly, perhaps, is understanding why an item is good on a champion, and in what situations.

Lack of coherent runes/masteries. Similar to item building, runes and masteries making sense is super important, especially for the early game advantage.

Bad CSing. CSing is by far the easiest way to improve your gold income, and thus your chance to win. Playmaking takes a lot more work, so CSing is almost always the place to start. Remember, every-- what is it, 15 or so?-- CS is a kill worth of gold, people!

ChimeiTekinaNasu1 votes

"Bad CSing". I always find it interesting when I commonly have the most CS as a top laner. That's also usually how I know when someone knows how to cs. When they have more than me by the end of the match.

As for builds, what I see in lower elos is when they get Hexdrinker/QSS. They'll actually bother upgrading it into Mawl/Mercurial as their 1st or 2nd full item. It seems like some know what to build, but go about the build order the wrong way. Like rushing homeguard boots at 5min mark...... Like 1500 gold and they get that on their first back. Instead of something like Hexdrinker or whatever else they need. Then waste like 2K gold upgrading Hex/QSS instead of getting other stuff.

i appreciate what youre trying to do, but you are reviewing a bunch of games where i was screwing around. please review the ranked matches before judging / giving advice. i dont think i use warlord on sejuani...last i checked i went 9-21-0 , if i did, either the system bugged and changed my mastery selection or a simple misclick...if i did put that many points into the offensive tree it would be for ap not ad on sejuani. those wonderful lee sin games your looking at was probably me goofing around as lee sin support, i only took him top lane a couple times yesterday..no idea what i was building. I cant play zed...not even a little, every once in a while i feel like my general game mechanics have gotten better and i practice him a bit...i still suck at zed :-\ in case you were wondering how this round went.

ChimeiTekinaNasu1 votes

dat 21/3 drave doe. Nice. So I guess you use mastery page 3 for Sejuani. The one titled Amumu/Nunu. Your 7th mastery page though has her name on it and seems to be for AP Sejuani, but 2 of the points happen to be in Warlord. So I guess you misclicked there or something.

" I cant play zed...not even a little, every once in a while i feel like my general game mechanics have gotten better and i practice him a bit...i still suck at zed :-\ " lol. I know how that feels. Sounds like my Yasuo. =P Whenever I use a champ for the first time, I take it into Co-Op to at least get use to their abilities and item builds. With Yasuo, I know what to build on him and I can wreck bots with him all the time. Then I think I'm ready to take him into PvP....I just feed, feed, feed :DDDD lol I just can't use Yasuo in normals for some reason. My only idea of what I'm doing wrong is that I'm probably playing his laning phase wrong. Like when to push, harass, or freeze lane. I mentioned that to one of my friends and he said "freezing lane with yasuo...sounds like a challenge. " I'm like "Oh...that might be what I'm doing wrong". I like Yasuo. I just can't use him in normals, sadly. So I just went back to champs I can use better and more my playstyle.

yeah, thats the one i use for sej...i had to log in to see the one you were talking about with her name, i must have made that a while ago because it looked a little retarded and i honestly dont recognize it...i just deleted it, i never use it anyway.

the draven game...yeah i think that was my first time playing him in normals. i bought him a while ago tried him in bots and couldnt catch axes so i forgot about him..then i got stuck with him in aram a few weeks ago or something and rofl stomped like a boss...im like, ok maybe i should take another look...i still dont catch the axes very much, but i try to do it when im freezing and just last hitting minions...a little extra gold never hurt! and i max the speed up and stand aside first before i mess with the q...it sounds stupid..its probably bad, but for some reason it was working for me. the very next game was the complete opposite, lol..i got rocked!

ChimeiTekinaNasu1 votes

lol. Generally the maxing order is Q, W, then E for Draven. I think you get E at level 2 though before W. Also a small tip for Draven. The direction you move is where your axe will land. So if you're moving foward while attacking, it will land in front of you. If you attack while moving back, it will go behind you. It usually goes in the direction you're moving when you attack.

Oh, one more thing. His W resets each time you catch his axe which makes great for chasing an enemy down. So you can pretty much spam it each time you catch your axe.

exactly my point, MMR is everything here, you win and lose games based on your mmr only. theres is nothing else that matters in this game, mmr > rank always.

rank has zero bearing whatsoever with who you play with. stop losing games left and right and you will see improvement. i cant help you if you lose to bronzies. dont blame your team mates when you straight up feed your lane and lose tower 7mins into the game.

go look at your cs, you're way lower than what you could have, all of your efforts are on your KDA, why? that only gives you such a lead, cs is just as important.

The bottom line is that it's a stat that's supposed to reflect personal performance and it's directly defined by the performance of you + a random set of four players instead. An indirect way to measure player skill no matter how you look at it.

heres the deal, the MMR system is flawed, but only slightly. this is because you will never reach you're true placement. however the system becomes good the more games you play.

you could feed 1 game and snowball another, if you're new the game doesn't know what to do with you, so you'll have very high LP gains/losses in both directions. over time you'll cease snowballing and feeding and an average game pattern starts to occur. well say you're 8/2 most of the time, great, you'll scale and climb up. lets say you're 6/12, you'll feed your way to bronze in no time.

but league takes countless games to get this estimation, it doesnt happen over a single night of 10 games played. 10 games is managable, or can be explained by afks leavers and bad team mates who auto lock in katarina into the enemy diana. but when you play 70 games, and lose over 40 of them, and win around ~20 of them, then its apparent that you can not compete at this level, and should be placed lower. you just wont have 40 of those ruined games. or a feeder every single time.and then there are games where the feeder is on the opposite side where you should be aware of them, and you should be taking advantage of them.

thats when its time to look at yourself and see whats wrong, why is you're cs so low compared to everyone above you, why didnt you buy any wards at all, why was there a pantheon behind you. those are the core questions you need to be asking yourself, and did you expect it or were you just doing what you have always been doing the entire time because its what you want to do.

you will learn to ask yourself every single game, how can we win, what should i do, is there a potential for me to be ganked right here, i think we should stop laning now and group as 5 and go run down the mid lane, these are all things you should constantly be asking yourself, and i just think you dont do that, you dont see your enemies coming and you pay for it.

but there comes a point where you want to be recognized for your skill and your general earnings and acomplishments, so does everyone else, you would have everyone further divided and separated into even more tiers?

even if you did this you would still play with the same quality of players due to matchmaking, for the sake of queue times, if you divide players too much it will be near impossible to start a game. and if we look just a smidge above and below your ranking it would be no different than it is now.

The elo system is not designed for team multiplayer games.

It is neither accurate nor responsive enough in its current application in league.

Even if I were to agree with you that system in place was matching players of relatively similar skill, I can't see you defending the ranking system itself, which is defined in near arbitrary strokes.

personally id add in questionnaires of common gameplay scenarios and whats the best action to take, and just slap a big +MMR bonus onto people for getting questions right, and ofc explanations for wrong answers. and then a disclaimer all scenarios are different, match ups are different, and players are unpredictable, etc etc.

id also promote more mmr swings for players on a monthly basis, ie start of every month you now gain and lose 20lp in either direction for your current standing regardless of where you were.

I would also recommend that if you lose two games in a row, or lose one game that is long and exceptionally frustrating, you take a break from ranked. I am no pro, only gold 5, but the best thing I did was to just chill out after a tilting streak or game and do something else, or play a normal and pick something silly

Freljordan2 votes

I also follow this rule, and I find I win way more games when I take a break after any loss period than when I keep playing ranked after losses. In fact, I don't play ranked after a loss until I've won a normal game

Last season i got frustrated being stuck in B4. id win then lose back and forth and i was losing more ip than i gained. I took a 3 week hiatus and played nothing but my 3s team with my friends, came back to ranked ans powered on a 28 game winning streak. I fully recommend finding some friends and doing some 3s for teamwork practice and finding a champion you can play exceptionally well. i ended up s4 when my streak stopped.

Freljordan1 votes

congrads on climbing a full tier, nothing to be sneezed at. I bet you also improved a lot from your time in 3's when it comes to both champion mechanics and teamwork! Even playing norms with a full team of friends (If you have that many who play regularly) will help people learn a LOT about teamwork since you are more likely to work as a team with friends without being as frustrated by mistakes etc, it really shows you how a good team works together and allows you to also focus on your champion mechanics too. I'd bet if you play more with your friends, especially in 5s (even if its not a full team 3 is still pretty decent) you could even get to gold my friend.

NinertaPrime1 votes

Thanks, yeah im currently undergoing a role change last season i was a top/jung with a little bit of adc, this season im going to be ADC/Support due to seeing themost amount of low skilled players in those roles in my current ranking, i have faced less than a handful of ADC's even as my hard counters who can toe to toe against me if we both have decent supports. Currently on a 5 game lucian streak, i know they nerfed him recently but im finding people dont know how to play against him since they havnt been seeing him alot. Hopinh that with some luck once im back in silveri can find some guys who want to duo or even build a 5s team.

In before "get gud scrub."

Anyways, the problem is the fact that the ranked system is built off of MMR, which isn't a problem if you're playing a single player game ranked. In a team orientated game like League, however, it's complete shit. The concept of ELO hell is real because the lower ranks you are, the better you have to be to single handedly carry a game. In Gold, even Silver, the chances of all 4 of your teammates not knowing what you're doing is slim at worst, and almost nonexistant at best. This is common in bronze, and you generally have to be diamond skill level to carry a team of 4 feeders, while you only have to be gold to carry a team of 1. See what I mean?

"The Elo system was invented as an improved chess rating system and is also used in many other games. It is also used as a rating system for multiplayer competition in a number of video games, and has been adapted to team sports including association football, gridiron football, basketball, Major League Baseball, competitive programming, and esports."

Wikipedia article on ELO, which MMR is based off of. NBA, NFL, NCAA (when the BCS was a thing) all use Elo to rank players. Elo is a very efficient and comprehensive way of measureing a subjective thing like "Skill Level".

Carring isn't doing everything on your own, teammates be damned. In the end this is a team game and you are judged as to how well you work in a team, weather that be 5 random strangers or a premade team. It makes no difference, accept in one mode it is MUCH harder to communicate and work things out.

I made a simple diagram to explain (my view of) rank.

Bronze games are easy to carry. Then you reach "Elo Hell" where games reach a relative max difficultly to carry. The Sweet Zone games are actually easier to carry than some of the lower ranked game that came before. Finally, you start The Climb, which truly show your skill.

Build a goddamn team. This solo queue shit is nonsense. This is a team based game where all most no one seems to be building teams. I always hear how X champ is only viable in premade fives but not solo queue. Shit on a cracker. Don't worry. I realize finding 4 people that you can sync up with for a long ass 60 minute game once a week is hard unless that is all you do. If only they didn't take so long.

Let me guess. Someone is going to tell me that's not the problem?

if you watch all the pro players they'll be playing mostly passive the whole game and focusing on their farm, and when their enemy makes a mistake, thats when they'll go in.

just from looking at your stats, the biggest things that could help you is to stop trading kill for kill, or trying to go ham, instead play it back and safe, focus on your last hitting and dodge their skill shots. if you find yourself getting ganked too much, buy wards, 75g is absolutely worth your life. because you spend 75g, thats the equivalent of 2 waves of missed cs, or (about 200g). + exp, in addition they wont get +300g, + cs + exp lead over you, which is way more important than dieing for a cs or a kill.

I appreciate all of your feedback! Honestly, I take kindly to your critique and I think you read me and my playstyle like a book. Thank you so much.

I think na.op.gg is going to be vital in my climbing experience from now on. :)

My problem with the system is the double layer MMR and LP.

Why, to this day, I can be playing against Diamond 3's and only be Plat 3 blows my mind. For that matter, why I need to win 66% of my games to get out of a promo, when I'm already fighting somebody an entire tier-set higher than me. How is that even supposed to be possible? The bonus LP doesn't figure in at this point either, because its a promotional. Its so terrible.

Its all random luck. Right now I have a 60% win rate in ranked (http://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=jiujitsuPhD) but I am bronze 4 and will probably move down to bronze 5. If I move up to bronze 3 I will probably just move back down to bronze 5. Why?

  1. If I win a game I get 16-22 points. If I lose a game I lose 22-25 points. Thus a 50% win rate does not cut it you need to be more like 60-70%+ to climb.

  2. Who is on your team is based on luck. I will win 4 games in a row and do really well in each of them then I will lose 4 games in a row. The difference between those 4 games? Afkers, toxic players, someone picking a new champ they have never played, no one choosing a tank or cc, etc. But it happens nearly every single game on one of the teams. No matter what one of the teams is getting stuck with 1-2 of these people.

  3. The system is really about luck at lower levels. There is a reason people pay a diamond/challenger to get them to gold. Yes they will fall back down but guess what, they usually level off in silver because thats really where they were.

  4. LP is terrible for ranking. Halo 2 did a much better job at ranking people and they would take lessons from that. It should be based on your mmr only.

Getting better at the game is an effective strategy to climb the ladder, focus on that.

... if only my teammates would do the same.

Instead they really do love to lose the game for me and drag me down with them.
