Confused with Item Selection and Scaling with AP

Been playing LoL for about a year now, first time on forums though.

Why do so many champs have random AD and AP damage scaling, when the only viable (and not laughable) way of building them is to choose usually AD?

A couple of Xin's skills can be powered by AP, same with Shen, Shyvana, Warwick...but NO ONE builds AP on them. In fact, i tried to build AP on them (in normals) and was immediately scrutinized for doing so in a not-so-polite way. Predictable. I also noticed immediately why...I was completely slaughtered and made no impact.

Why does Riot put random, useless AP scaling on mainly AD champs?

Also, I have been feeling like even though we have a great selection of items to choose from, each champ essentially has 3-4 mandatory items and a couple optional ones. At the end of the day, you build the same damn thing each and every game. Or risk be flamed in chat

Garen's E can critically strike. Why bother making it critically strike? No one will ever build crit items on Garen. Why isn't there an item that has a unique passive of "Every critical strike heals for 10% of your missing health". Then someone might consider that. (That may be a bad idea, im just giving an example).

Hecarim has two abilities that can scale with AP, but NO ONE builds AP on him. He's a tank bruiser, which by definition means health, resistances, and AD, not AP.

Anyways, I've always been confused by these useless, and somewhat random attributes on some champs. I don't want to say that LoL needs more items, but more kinds of unique passives and actives would be great.

It seems random sometimes about these AD and AP skills, and I've also been feeling like I'm building the same exact thing on every champ, every game, which FEELS strange because I have a huge selection of items.

I understand you want only armor items on Malph or Rammus, but again, there are two more champs who can scale with AP, but if you dare build AP on them you are flamed and ridiculed. I have been, anyways. On multiple occasions, so I stick with standard builds. There aren't any AP items that cater to tanks or bruisers. They're all for mages.

Are there enough AP items that cater to the face-face, close quarters, bruiser type champion selection? I feel like there aren't, or I just don't know how to build AP items on these champs. Shen's Q can scale with 2% of your AP, but there are absolutely no AP items that cater to a champ like Shen. I tried in normals to test two items for a total of 200 AP, which gained me an additional 4% enemy max health as physical damage, plus his ult can scale well with it.

It didn't work. And to my point, I'm sure a few of you are laughing at me right now for even trying it. Of course it wouldn't work.

Then WHY do it?

Why bother having useless AP on predominantly AD champs? Just sort of rambling out loud here looking to learn a thing or two. Take care

rageblade.

its basically tacked on to make them synergize better with certain items. used to be triforce when it still gave ap.

yes, that was actually a viable build when you were snowballing. problem is since the removal of crit on ghostblade isnt not a good build path anymore. but it also doesnt hinder him, since t doesnt factor into his power budget.

I mean you can say that there is no room for experimentation with these champs that have odd AP or AD scaling, but even if that were true, which is questionable to me, it does allow for more flexibility with your build. You might value an item that provides a bonus 20 AP as a champ like Shyvana because it does provide a fair damage increase per AP. Also it wouldn't make sense for certain abilities to scale with a stat that is most relevant for a champ, so why not have a few weird scaling abilities such as graves smokescreen.

There are a lot of champions that do have both AP and AD scaling which can be confusing to some people and result in some people doing poorly because they tried it out. I don't really get why people would care if you tried one out (as long as you do it in a normal and not ranked etc) but I think you should at least try it out in a custom game and find a build that you feel can work with it.

Though a lot of them actually work, even now they can do pretty good...and not just the ones that every one knows about like AP Ezreal, AP Corki, AP Tristana, AP Varus, AP Tryndamere, AD TwistedFate, AD Kennen etc.

Some of the lesser known ones can actually do pretty well once you get the hang of how they play and what they build...AP Shyvana, AP Warwick, AD Akali, AP Aatrox, AP Ashe, AD Blitzcrank, AD Elise, AP Gnar and probably more but gave enough examples of semi-decent ways to play these champions...Though obviously it's not as good as their main style but with enough practice and knowledge of what to build and play style, it can work.
