Rune changes (upgradeable runes)

StupidPlats··15 votes·1,530 views

To be completely honest, runes below level 20 are almost a waste of IP. I understand if there is a reason behind why we can not upgrade runes once we reach the level requirement for them, but if not then why can't we upgrade our runes for the difference between the new and the old rune? It would make buying runes at low levels completely worth it in every way. Just curious why this isn't a thing yet. Anyone know? Is this coming in the near future?

Heck, Riot could even lower level requirements on runes (I know that is less likely of an option) to say 15 or 10 for tier 3's and 8/7 or 5 for tier 2's and everyone gets access to tier 1's when they start.

Runes should scale with Summoner level, so we don't have to buy new tiers of runes, just focus on what types of stats to get. Then let the in game per level scale with the summoner level scaling.

I think you shouldn't buy runes befor level 20 or your just wasting ipPantheon

That's my point. It's honestly a waste until 20. but then you are at a disadvantage compared to people with runes at level 20

Yeah, the Rune Combiner is horrible. Rune Upgrader would be much better, and would entice more people to try different Rune setups

Something definitely needs to be done with rune combiner. Maybe there should be rune recipes?

Rune recipes would be interesting, but I don't know how useful it would be.

The question becomes what should be accomplished with lower tier runes?

Currently, lower level players unlock one rune slot per level AND they are limited to a certain tier of runes. In all honestly, one of those two systems should go. You then have a situation where if, by some querk in the system, a new player bought a few runes they like and they hit Level 10 and have to buy the upgraded versions of those runes, and buy the upgraded version of those again when they hit level 20.

It's this last point which the rune combiner pathetically tries to solve. I don't want to destroy 5 marginally useful runes for 1 random rune, I want to know what I'm going to get. Random runes should be a reward, not a punishment.

I know one thing that was mentioned by Riot the last time I saw them address this is that they don't want to dramatically re-do the rune system in a way that would cause people to feel jipped. AKA: Runes will likely retain their same price no matter what.

Maybe they could give out runes after a certain number of victories as a reward. At least some sort of change from the old way.

Tier 1 runes are actually good, Tier 2 are really bad to buy. Just because of how cheap Tier 1's are, you can buy a crap ton, and barely use any IP.

StupidPlats1 votes

Yes tier 1's are decent but when matchmaking has you against level 10s to level 20s its hard for it to be fair IN TERMS OF RUNES, player skill can make the difference too, but I feel that runes need a rebalance or something

Sogreth1 votes

You know, regardless of skill..Tier 1 and 2 runes barely give you enough stats to make any huge, or any noticeable difference. You could also say the same thing for Masteries then though, a Lv10 vs a Lv18, that Lv18 is going to have an extra 8 Mastery points that he gets to use.

So the lower level players getting matched up to level 30 players (full masteries and runes) are just going to have to take the beating? Kinda like a hazing period until they can level up to full power I guess.

StupidPlats1 votes

exactly. If you have friends who got you into this game and they are higher levels then its rough to play with them. But even still in normal solo queue there is usually a range of 10 levels and having rune be easier to use and access for lower levels would help them especially in laning phase.

No they aren't. They fixed that a long time ago. Low levels are NOT being matched with Lv30's. Only time that happens is premades, then at that point it's up to the players. Riot can't force people to not play with their friends. Well, they could but, this is a game afterall, they want to support bringing your friends in and playing with them.

StupidPlats1 votes

that's true but that also supports my idea because then even though they may have different masteries, they can still have the same tier of runes. For instance some newer players might not even know runes have different tiers and spend all of their IP elsewhere. It's not that easy to get thousands of IP to buy a whole new set of runes whereas my idea allows them to spend a smaller amount of IP to upgrade their previous runes

Yeah. I agree. At what level can you start buying tier 3 runes? 30?

StupidPlats1 votes

Tier 1: Everyone. Tier 2: Level 10+. Tier 3: Level 20+

It's actually very easy o_O

You could play a couple games a day (Just to get your "first win of the day" bonus) and you can save up quite a lot of IP. And that's only like 1-3 games a day. If someone really wants IP, they will play more, I was up to 16k one time, with full rune pages, and I don't play that much anymore.

I play like 6 games a day at most and that's only 1k IP at best. Full Rune pages are upwards of 6000 IP

Really like the idea. Gives people the opportunity to fix the mistakes (buying lower tier runes) they made when they started. I have some random t3 mana per fives or something that never see the light of day.

Arvex1 votes

I have another solution to suggest.

Instead of removing lower tier runes, why not give players vouchers/tokens for T1 and T2 runes every level?

This gives them the chance to try out the rune mechanic without having to spend IP that they could be saving for champions or T3 runes. And they still have to earn them.

Tier one runes are pretty decent to be honest, tier 2 isn't mathematically effecient to warrant a price increase compared to tier 1. Tier 1 is kind of like an introduction in runes and how it works, and the only way you can jungle in lower levels. Pretty much just take tier 2 away, lower the cost of tier one and let them be a kind of tutorial on how runes work. That's what i would change. Tier two is so wastefull, and IP is hard to come by unless either you're buying boosts (which is still maybe an extra 50-100 a game) or you have all day to sit down and play. They shouldn't be so expensive that the mindset is. Dont spend any IP on champs, just buy them with real money. (and im not saying that riot lets us pay for runes with money i would probably quit league if that happened)
