What is Poppy supposed to be?

I'm a mid level platinum player on euw and enjoy playing Poppy in top lane. I was wondering what Poppy's intended go to lane is supposed to be. As i'm facing opposing champions like irelia, riven, yasuo, gp, ryze, etc. i'm sitting here and asking myself what Poppy's winning conditions are, provided you play her in top lane. If you build full tank on her, you are guaranteed to lose any trade against the just mentioned ranged/dps champions. As far as i am concerned the only trading opportunity arises, if you can land a stun. Often however the first death is due to a failed e stun since this ability imo is really hard 2 land.

Edit: The other valid choice is simply run away and kite with qwe, making the laning phase outstandingly boring. Moreover farming as a full tank is very tedious/hard making you lose cs.

Poppy is definitely a top laner, and what most people have started doing with her is the old "Anyone can be a tank if you believe hard enough" build, where you build Sunfire Cape and Iceborn Gauntlet, into straight tank items, skipping cleaver entirely in favor of raw bulk. What this does is turn you into a sustained damage threat that makes people have to deal with the fact that if they make a move towards your back line, you're their to beat the shit out of them. With a giant Hammer. Painfully.

I'm kind of surprised as well. I play her as support and go full tank. I use AD red in runes, armour yellows and magic resist blues. Sometimes I do a lot of damage for a support due to her base damage. It does A LOT.

Why should you win trades if you're not good enough to land your E as Poppy?

Fiora doesn't win trades if she manages to miss every Vital. Jax doesn't tend to win trades if he totally wastes his E. Shen didn't win trades if he couldn't land his E (now he just doesn't win trades period, thanks Riot).

If you're not good enough to land your stun you don't deserve to win lane.

  1. Poppy is a top laner, and I happen to be in the realm of silver V, and I have clocked in over 100k mastery points with her, getting mastery lvl 7. She is my go-to tank, but I usually sneak a damage item in my build. I usually play Poppy as an AD bruiser. The standard build looks like this:item 3068 item 3071 item 3111 item 3065 item 3143 oritem 3742 item 3083 . I know that people usually build item 3025 as a damage item on Poppy, but I don't. Since the price reduction of Black Cleaver, it is a much more viable damage item on Poppy. It gives CDR (A great stat on Poppy) AD (Mo' AD', Mo' damage) and some health. The tank items can be situational, but that is what I run most of the time. item 3512 is also a great pickup. In lane, look for the minions that the enemy will be looking to last hit, and then use your Q on your allied minion to poke them down. You can use the range of the passive to poke the laner down as well or use it to last hit easier. Typically, if I can get the laner against the wall, I go for it, but usually use it as a gap closer to secure the kill. If you want to get some safe damage off, run up to them, Q them, and then activate W to run away. This either pushes them out of lane or allows you to whittle them down for the kill. item 3068 in conjunction with your Q also allows you to clear waves with ease, although you are always pushing lane and it does draw turret aggro.
TL;DR item 3071 is a great damage item for Poppy and zone your opponent with Q.
