Why isn't Sona played more?

Basically the title. Why isn't Sona played more in this item 3504 Support Meta? You can spam her heal which also grants a small shield to all players in range. It basically applies item 3504 passive constantly right? So why isn't Sona a top 5 support pick right now? Am i missing something?

Edit: Should have mentioned i've been out of the loop concerning LoL for awhile now. I've played most aram games just to kill time but haven't followed the game/patches or even pro play. Since worlds came on i've been reborn lol and my interest for the game is coming back and it was something i noticed while watching worlds and wondered what was wrong with Sona while janna lulu karma rakan and taric were being played alot during pro play but was wondering about sona. Thank you for the detailed responses they are a big help.

Compared to the other Ardent champs Sona has a longer CD heal, and burns more mana than any except Taric (Who can apply it more frequently than any other ardent user and in two different AOE's) She is also the squishiest of all of them, making her very vulnerable to ganks and doesn't have any hard CC before level 6, making her quite weak at and against turret dives.

She also trades consistent damage for burst, making her weak in the constant trading most lanes partake in, meaning that after she bursts someone she is very weak for the next 5-10 seconds.

Her main strength is her ability to reduce the enemy carry's damage, but in lane that means giving up most of her own damage, and late game it is unlikely she can do it since her range isn't great.

Another big thing is that like Taric she makes her team want to group up for the ardent boosts, but she is so squishy that the AOE abilities that are thrown out in retaliation to grouping up will just kill her in comparison to someone like Taric who is tanky enough to survive that.

Her heal also can't be targeted, meaning it will often heal the tank instead of the ADC because tanks are the ones getting taken down low first, then sit around at low HP for a while. This means that if the enemy team chunks your tank and forces them to back off, then focuses your ADC, you have almost no ability to heal them since by the time they are low enough for the projectile to target them they are already dead because her heal projectile isn't very fast.

So Sona lacks a lot of the tools to help priority targets stay alive due to the conditionals on her abilities once you get to the teamfighting stage, and her early game lacks the hard CC and tools to make up for that.

What Sona is good at is rotation games, due to her teamwide movespeed boost. However that isn't very big right now and if you did want to grab a support for that Karma is a much better choice with a stronger laning phase and teamwide ardent censors in a much larger AOE.

It takes Sona a LOT longer to get to the point where she can spam Ardent procs with the same speed Janna Lulu or Soraka can.

She IS played more. Like 11% in Diamond.

  • If you mean pro play, it's because her kit is hot garbage on a fundamental level that's only alleviated by itemization. Coordinated play doesn't allow for this.

  • If you mean solo queue, it's because her kit is really boring to most people.

Lulu Janna are just so much stronger and she is when they are banned

T2theMan10/8/2017, 11:20:22 PM2 votes

She has the highest winrate as a support right now, she's great. She's just extremely unfun to play and way more squishy than janna/soraka

hhaavviikk10/8/2017, 7:34:29 PM2 votes

maybe because she's boring? I certainly don't find it interesting that Q/W/E are auto aimed so all you gotta do is just be in range and roll your face on the keyboard, hell if you're playing ARAM you can setup a macro which presses W every 4 seconds and you're getting the same experience as if you weren't using a macro, it's just boring

So we are in a meta where bot lane constantly is hit by 3-5 man dives and collapses very early, many times pre-6. What can Sona not do pre-6? Peel for her carry, she can poke, she can speed up and she can heal but none of that will stop a 3-5 man dive like a Janna Tornado/slow, nami bubble/slows/speed buffs, Raka W into E escape, etc etc. Without any real CC pre-6, Sona simply leaves her bot lane to vulnerable even though all the items in the world seems like they should be perfect for her.

Supp Main Speaking here. But its seems that already all is said here i want to add something from mz experience.

Sona is in my opinion a jack of all trades. She has some healing and shielding, but Soraka / Janna are doing better there.

She has some poke, but again, if i want a poke/peel champ i go for Lulu . Or go directly for the heavy options:Zyra / Brand

Utilitywise she has a build in exhaust (kinda, splitted into 2 instances in her passive) and a stun. But again i can simply go for Bard / Thresh .

item 3504 topic: We have to talk about this, because its just to strong to not talk about in the current meta. Although she has options to spread the passive of this item very well, her heal is one a kinda big cooldown. which brings me to her big problem number 1(in my opinion): MANA COSTS. Especially in early game. After 4 mins of kinda intense laning u´ll run dry until u can get some mana regen.

Sona is not a bad champ, and i like her kinda, But currently, there are much easier/stronger options to do stuff she does.

Soraka:

Low Mana costs Low cooldowns High ratios

Sona:

Extremely high mana costs (especially early game) High cooldowns until rank 3 ultimate. Mediocre ratios on heal and shield.

Personally I wouldn't mind if they removed the shield from Sona's W and increase the ratio/base of the heal.

No real utility other than stun ult, drains mana super fast, and super squishy. Though already summed up by others.

At least Lulu has a knockup ult and some laning safety, though most pros don't really make a full use of them.

However, Sona is still a very good champ to climb with in soloQ. She doesn't really get banned as compared to Lulu/Janna/Raka here.

She is tho

Daddy Ants10/9/2017, 1:00:43 PM1 votes

Sona is still a strong champion to climb with.

You are punished harder for mistakes/bad positioning on Sona than on Janna/Lulu/Soraka.

Linna Excel10/8/2017, 7:39:17 PM1 votes

She's played a lot and is a top 10 support. Her biggest issues are she's squishy and her power is more late game oriented.

Rainfall10/8/2017, 7:52:03 PM1 votes

because players rush ardent even before sighstone. ardent is an item with no defensive stats on sona, the squishiest support in the game sounds like a recipe for disaster

Because people want a real support , who can ward , she is more usefull than any support if she goes full ap , she can take down the enemy's ap and the enemy's adc sometimes , she is more like an assasin if she goes full ap , I personally find her played more than any other support in normal matches and blind picks and most of female players mains her more than Janna or Soraka!

xelaker10/8/2017, 10:06:21 PM1 votes

She is played a fair amount, and sits at a nice 50% winrate for the most part
