Thoughts on Runic Shield and possible ways to make it useful

After seeing too many people fall for what can be described as a noob trap mastery, I have been thinking on ways to possibly improve it.

Right now the mastery does practically nothing, 50 HP is nothing late game. Even early game, the shield has very little value, it would probably block one attack from an ADC or one hit from Ancient Golem/Elder Lizard for a jungler. And once the shield is gone, it's gone until you die. First poke/hit of the game effectively deletes a mastery until you die.

Solution 1: Scaling Examples: 50 + 5 HP/level (140 at level 18) or 50 + 1% of maximum HP (80 with 3,000 HP.) Don't take these numbers seriously, they are examples. If the actual number ends up too high, it could easily break certain champions... DrMundo I was originally going to say 2%, but you'll easily get the bonus value of the shield over the base value.

Solution 2: Reset/Refresh Shield refreshes on full heal at spawn: -When I first read the mastery, I misread it and thought that was how it actually worked (and went an embarrassing game with it.) -or- Reset shield on assist/kill: -This would be great for the full-ham tank supports like Leona and gank happy junglers who enjoy aggressive plays. Go in for the kill/assist and have a nice shield to help you get out of the fray afterwards.

Just remove the talent. It's absolute garbage.

However, if Riot wanted to make runic shield NOT absolute garbage, they need only redesign it to function similarly to the Homeguard upgrade for boots. Return to base. Out of combat for X seconds. Shield regenerates. Slap a 2-4 minute duration on it, -OR- a 1-2 minute cooldown, if Riot thinks this would create abusive circumstances during base defense.

Start the shield at 50-60HP at Level 1, with a +5/+10 increase per level.

Bam~! Suddenly the mastery is worth getting. Sometimes.

Or just remove it entirely.

I don't like the idea of removing it entirely. It's an interesting mechanic that just needs a little work.

Giving it a cooldown or duration adds a level of complexity that is just going to make it not worth getting. It should be simple, but feel like that mastery point was actually worth it. It should last until destroyed, but not absorb too much damage to put it in line with other champion's own shields.

Making it a 50 hp malphite passive would be a good mastery that helps melees in the early game.
