Maokai noob, please HELP

Hey guys, Mainly just creating this thread because I've recently been playing Maokai and would like some outside thought. The most important advice I'd like is what seems to work best with his kit? What kind of core items should I never pass up etc. I believe he's a pretty strong champion and can be a very viable option when it comes to champ selection. Please let me know your thoughts!

Thanks,
