Why I Quit League of Legends After Playing for 5 Years

I played a normals game today to relax, and several players on the opposing team continuously typed cruel remarks. It ticked me off, and I became enraged (honest truth and pretty sad). I understand there is a feature to turn off all chat, but doing so would make me feel like a coward.

I have been a devoted league of legends player for 5 years now since high school and now I'm in college. When I started, the game was really fun, but now the appeal is somehow lacking, possibly due to the community becoming worse.

I am sharing a conversation I had after that game on Skype where I sort of bantered at a friend in the call which was really unreasonable when he told me to calm down.

The conversation continues several minutes later onto the skype messaging system when I ended the call.

[12:05:20 AM] Andrew: sorry just ignore what I said [12:05:31 AM] Andrew: i'm uninstalling league [12:05:38 AM] Yulin: No I hate you [12:08:58 AM] Yulin: =_= You sort of choose to be nice In a game with terrible people and keep the negative energy that you grant from the game afterward..... Which is opposite to most people in the game, they could behave well in real world but be assholes in a game because that's how they vent(don't know if that's the right word) [12:09:31 AM] Yulin: But I hope I mad sense (nod) [12:09:42 AM] Andrew: I already understand that [12:09:52 AM] Andrew: I've been wanting to quit league since the school year started so I am now [12:09:54 AM] Andrew: officially [12:09:58 AM] Andrew: uninstalling [12:10:40 AM] Andrew: don't want to deal with that [12:10:44 AM] Yulin: K........ [12:10:46 AM] Andrew: "negative energy" [12:11:05 AM] Andrew: the fun atmosphere I knew from when I started is gone [12:11:10 AM] Andrew: that's why I only ranked [12:11:27 AM] Andrew: since it's more acceptable to me for people to be mean [12:11:31 AM] Andrew: in a competitive sense [12:11:34 AM] Yulin: I kinda talked to my parents about this negative/positive energy thingy... And they kinda have no idea what it is.. [12:12:09 AM] Andrew: they didn't play this sort of video game [12:12:46 AM] Yulin: But they technically have way more negative energy in real life then game [12:12:59 AM] Yulin: Like WAY more [12:13:08 AM] Andrew: real life they can discuss it face to face [12:13:18 AM] Andrew: people are cowards on the internet and say rude things then run [12:13:34 AM] Yulin: Yeah... Tru... [12:15:31 AM] Yulin: Hey man just do whatever you think is best Since doublelift transfer, Dunkey quit You can also be part of this crazy changes of the game XD [12:16:02 AM] Andrew: a lot of viewers I followed quit; that may have influenced my decision [12:16:11 AM] Andrew: i mean streamers/famous people* [12:16:17 AM] Yulin Yeah... Same [12:19:01 AM] Andrew: plus you've noticed my unreasonable thinking sometimes when playing league; i get mad for stupid reasons

i'm a competitive spirit that's how i grew up; i like to argue for what i feel is right and counter arguments. i was on the debate team for a little in my high school so at the end, i resolve issues/problems introduced.

i have done so in games i played before which then i made friends. these tended to be mmos [12:19:25 AM] Andrew: i am a little bit intoxicated; and my emotional state may be higher than it is right now [12:19:37 AM] Andrew: so sorry [12:19:49 AM] Andrew: if i made you feel anything negative or bad [12:19:56 AM] Andrew: i take back everything i said [12:21:15 AM] Yulin: Lol after I drink you can't make me feel bad or negative and you knew it

Just want to make sure you feel better [12:21:25 AM] Andrew: thank you [12:21:27 AM] Yulin : And I agree with what you said [12:21:42 AM] Yulin: Just wwe have differnt ways handling things [12:21:45 AM] Yulin: And it's totally fine

People reading this can continue to play. Just for me, I'm out for the reasons stated in the conversation.

"feature to turn off all chat, but doing so would make me feel like a coward."

why?

and league behavior is pretty much the same throughout any team based game, but 8 anonymous users together and shit is going to hit the floor, any team based game has its fair share of toxicity, just don't let it get to you.

Sounds like you have a problem then, specifically here:

but doing so would make me feel like a coward.

Would protecting yourself from words be bravery? Would it be courage? No. Ignoring words, therefore, is not cowardice.

Words cannot hurt you. Words can lead to actions that can hurt you, but it's the actions you need to defend yourself from. If there is no threat of action there is literally no reason to give the words any weight. The only time defending yourself from meaningless words should be acceptable is on the playground in school.

Moving on to another game is a natural thing everyone should do from time to time. Maybe you'll come back, maybe you won't. Only time will tell. With that said not allowing words to hurt you is something you have to learn. Quitting League won't make it go away.

I've literally been called a racist during what I thought was a friendly debate on economics, however I did not feel the need to defend myself. I recognized that person as an idiot and simply dropped the conversation. They didn't actually mean me harm, they just didn't know how to properly defend their point of view, and so I literally walked away. It's a skill everyone should learn in life, and learn early.

TLDR: You're only a coward if you don't defend yourself or others from actions. Words, even harmful ones, are not actions in and of themselves.

I know what it's like to deal with toxicity in normals. I try my damndest to be calm in games.

League is...odd for me. I'm a pessimist in real life, I don't see the positive side of things. But in league I'm different, I'm incredibly optimistic. I can't say how many times I've tried to motivate people in game, or respond decently to trolls and flamers. I don't see the venting thing as an appropriate thing, but that's just me.

The community in league has a lot of problems. It's up to us to try and make it better. I wish you luck in your future though, games are meant to be fun. If you're not having fun, then why play?

I don't even try to calm people down anymore. People get more angry when you try to calm them down. Instead, insult the enemy team, but keep it in team based chat. Example:

(enemy is godlike) ExamplePlayer: man f*** this game, piece of ****. jungler sucks, should uninstall. this top isn't even good, just lucky im lagging ExampleResponseByMe: jungler, you're fine. I also agree that top laner is garbage, and we'll pick up your slack from the lag, we still got this, godlike ain't shit ExamplePlayer: yeah i guess but i need ganks or ima keep feeding ExampleResponseByMe: Come gank me instead, easier kill opportunity to get you back in it

In this example chat, I didn't tell my top laner to calm down, I didn't tell him to fix mistakes, I didn't tell him he was playing wrong. I agreed with him, and I proposed a solution that didn't involve insulting him, whilst simultaneously removing the soon-to-be salt he just dropped on the jungler with a passive "jungler, you're fine."

The only time I tell people their mistakes are when i'm in a party in a voice chat, because tonality is key.

That's a pretty good approach. When I'm losing hard in lane, really I do need a good confidence boost more than anything else.

Players should work as a team after all, we got to fall back on each other if we want to win.

[12:16:02 AM] Andrew: a lot of viewers I followed quit; that may have influenced my decision [12:16:11 AM] Andrew: i mean streamers/famous people*

So, basically, you're incapable of thinking for yourself, and are instead thinking, "Man, everyone I watch says this game sucks. I was having fun before I saw these videos, but since I watched these videos saying League sucks, I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and say it sucks and leave"

Dunkey didn't influence me, Uber didn't influence me. They left in such negative ways, I took their opinions with a grain of salt. Dunkey increased his toxicity to another level, just to get banned on purpose, just to use that to try and persuade people Riot sucks with the reporting system, which is not the case. It may suck on a case by case basis, but the overall data shows it's doing its job properly.

Uber decided to completely insult the game by saying the only time it's fun is when the game is a complete blowout in his favor, which is probably why Him and Keyori only played customs where it was full plat against bronze. He then decided to completely shit on item changes, and Riot as a whole. He wanted to persuade his viewers to leave league by bitching about the game being too balanced and stale. So, he goes and plays Smite, and gets completely shit on, and ends up not liking that game either. Funny.

Both of these youtubers pulled douchebag moves and should not let the door hit them on their way out. But, if the door did hit them, it'd be pretty funny.

As for pro players retiring, team synergy and organization staff plays a huge role in that, not the game itself.

That's an unfair statement in my opinion People that you like leaving the game has an effect, and it's not just a sheep thing

I'm still playing this game with no plans to quit, but gee GOLLY whiz it's hard to relax nowadays. Everyone's so tense, everyone doesn't really care about fun. Sometimes League feels like a bucket of crabs I mean other times it's awesome but I think the super fast-paced snowbally thing going on leaves zero room to relax and actually enjoy the game. Poor, poor tanks.
