like honestly the champions not being free in 2018 is lowkey disgusting .... 8 seasons in they're still not free ??? i think it would be fine to have new champions be buyable with BE for a certain time but we honestly need to make the champions free already :/ same with rune pages. so pls rito give us the free champions already its not like u will lose a huge amount of money from doing that [slayer-jinx-wink]

They expressed champion sales (for RP) was/is actually a sizable portion of their revenue when they were doing runes reforged. Since people would no longer need to spend IP/BE on runes, people will be more prone to buy champs with game currency instead of buying them for RP, so the change to make runes free did hurt them financially.

This is more or less the reason they expressed for why they were net lowering the amount of orange essence people got for disenchanting stuff (we get more stuff to disenchant from events and so on, but even accounting for that it's somewhat less overall). So champion sales are actually important enough that they felt the need to address OE rates much to the dissatisfaction of regular chest buyers, so I wouldn't blow them off just because they're not as fancy as skins.

Incidentally, these days we can get any paid content for free in theory now due to hextech crafting, so really the games the free-est its ever been.

This ain't Overwatch, you don't need all champions. Having all champions unlocked from the start drastically changes the experience, especially for new players. Besides, with the champion shards, I could see a lot of people making the case that it's pretty easy to get a bunch of champions to play as.

Now, with Rune Pages, you have a point. I'm sick and tired of customizing rune pages because I'm saving my Blue Essence. You can change them at champion select, there's seriously no reason to make them paid content to have more loadouts that you don't have to change in the few minutes you have in champion select.

I don't see how this can possibly be a viable complaint.. I own every champion and didn't have very many issues unlocking them. Hell, I even have Blue Essence left over, so much I was wasting it on name changes over and over for a while. It's easy to unlock champions in this game if you actively play it.

Now skins on the other hand... [sg-lulu]

Bruh do you even economics?

The way the game is built, we get BE at a certain rate. We can then spend BE on unlocking characters and sometimes rune pages and other things. If Riot does away with the cost for champions, they are also going to have to do away with the BE earnings, because there is no need for it after that.

If you want free champions then you had better be okay with not earning BE anymore, or at least earning it at a severely reduced rate.

BE is baked into the progression system of this game, and making champions free would bring about the end of that progression system.

We even have this same system of all champions being open to all in one andd people tend to stick to flavor of the month or their mains

Don't you auto get a couple champions free? As well as the easy amount you get from shards.

Idk man, i've only been playing for a bit over a year and I already have 95 of the 140 champs and thats without spending money to buy champs (have bought a couple skins w/ RP), and the champs i dont have are champs i dont really care about having.

With so many champs, and more frequent updates than most games I don't see this as a big issue, perhaps lower level players should get more of the simpler (cheaper) champs as they level up for free just to fill out their roster, but to make all champs available is just excessive.

Plus new players would likely try to play champs w/ high skillcap that they aren't ready for and possibly get discouraged and quit the game. This would benefit smurfs more than anything and god knows the game doesnt need more smurfs.

Except they've stated that they actually would take a pretty sizeable revenue hit from making champs free on Reddit before, I believe.

There's not a lot of incentive for them to voluntarily take a hit to their income. One argument is that it'd make the playerbase happy, which should be good for the long-term - however, consider the fact that this community disregards anything good Riot does and shits on them for all the smallest things and that "make the community happy" side isn't as relevant anymore.

I'm sure if people can give them a more compelling argument than "it's 2018, c'mon," it might be something they can viably consider.

there would be many players playing champions they have no clue how to play. hence buying champs are more meaningful
