Do Ranked Placements Reset at Season Start?

I got back into the mix a couple of months ago after a year-ish hiatus, and was considering doing my placements now. My question is, if I do them now, when the season starts on Jan 23, will I have to do my placement matches again? I've never tried this close, and I can't remember how it used to work.
