From A New Player - Skill Disparity In Ranked Is Absurd

I've been playing League for about 2-3 months now, and Ranked for almost a month or so. I consider myself okay but not great at every role except top, which I try not to play because I'm terrible at it. After my placement matches, I was put into Silver 2, and since then, I fell to Silver 4 and just go back and forth from Silver 4 to Silver 3 over and over again.

From the perspective of a new player, the way the competitive ranks are set up makes absolutely no sense. My expectation when I play ranked is to be matched up with other people around my skill level and experience, so theoretically for my MMR, that should be Silver 4 to Silver 3 level people like me. However, what actually ends up happening is an EXTREME disparity of skill in every single game. The difference in ability between the best player in any given game and the worst player is absolutely astronomical.

I'm talking every single game, in the same game there is someone (or multiple people) who is 0/6 with 68 CS or something at 20 minutes, and someone who is 12-0 at the same time. I watch the 0/6 person, and they have absolutely no clue what they're doing, dying to basic things like running back into lane and immediately engaging again against someone ridiculously fed because they have full HP and the fed person has 40-50%, so they think they can win, or people who never leave their lane like ever, for any reason. On the other side, we have people who are obviously far, FAR better than me, walking all over the map and deleting the entire opposing team.

I normally play bottom lane, either support or adc, and in my experience, either we kick the other team around the map like soccer balls, or else we receive an unholy curbstomp without a prayer of even being able to farm minions. It doesn't feel good either way. When I win my lane like that, I feel sorry for my opponent getting matched up against me when they should be lower, and when I get beaten down, I wonder what the hell the opponent is even doing at a rating low enough to be matched to my skill level.

The result of this is that every single match feels decided before it ever starts by the flip of a coin. As someone who is neither a god awful feeder or a super god like team deleter, whether I win or lose depends entirely on whether I have the feeders or the gods in any given game, and so with that said, my question is this.

How is it that the clueless 0/6 people with 68 CS and enemy team deleters are considered close enough in skill to be placed in the same game? In a game with (as far as I can tell) 27 different ranks, how is there such a glaring, canyon wide discrepancy between skill levels in the same game? Why is it that Riot allows this to continue when it 1) prevents players from properly gauging their skill level. Case in point, I FEEL like I have gotten a lot better at the game, my individual scores are better and I can duel my platinum friend in lane better than when I started, however my MMR has DROPPED 150 points since I started ranked; 2) sends a clear message to new players in particular that improving at the game is not rewarded, but is subject to a random string of luck, and thus discourages efforts to improve since there is no visible benefit or reward.

I'm not blaming teammates for my losses only, I'm blaming them for my wins too. There are plenty of games I'm in where bottom lane is basically an even match, and by 15-20 minutes, either a teammate or an opponent is like 10-0, and we win or lose. By that time though, it doesn't matter what I do, I can't hurt the 10-0 if he's on the other team, and if he's on my team and we're that far ahead, the team barely even needs me to win. Case in point, here are my last 10 ranked games:

Win: 27-2 at 19:46 Win: 25-6 at 20:12 Loss: 18-6 at 22:14 Loss: 19-7 at 20:54 Loss: 15-3 at 20:45 Loss: 35-13 at 23:28 Loss: 35-17 at 26:41 Loss: 59-39 at 34:24 Win: 19-15 at 26:04 (Close game) Loss: 34-10 at 22:16

That's 1 close game and 9 unholy curbstomps. Is that really fun for anyone?

This is why it is said to take about 1000 games of ranked to really show someones skill level. Over time your skill should eventually show where you land even with bad and good teammates. I think there is not a good way to balance matchmaking anyway. This kind of disparity happens in most online games because there are way too many outside factors than just the in-game choices. (people in battlefield going 50 kills/2 deaths for example) If you don't take better masteries and runes then you might lose just because they have better pregame stats than you or counter you with a good counter pick. If your ping is up and down then ping can also occasionally ruin ranked games as people don't always know they will lag before they do. They could also just have a lapse in attention and lose lane after 1 or 2 deaths. You should just focus on how you can improve YOUR gameplay because the rest is out of your control. The ranked system isn't MMR based anymore so when players get stuck in promotional matches that unfairly pit them with bad teams you can see how someone silver 2 or 3 might be gold 4 or 5 in reality but is stuck. This is why i started by saying that it might take about 1000 games to really reach your goal of "seeing your skill".

Also: go post on Reddit. Riot seems to give more attention there? maybe?

Its probably worse right now than normal since season is over and there is in increase in smurfs. That and new accounts do not have to deal with the beginning of the season rank reset. So most new players are placed into silver 2 or 3 but most likely do not belong there. It sounds like you are doing ok in silver 3 or 4, but a lot of these new players should really be bronze.

There's a ton of smurfs in low elo. Smurfs are secondary accounts used by players to play on an elo lower than their real one (the elo their main account has). So if I'm diamond, make a 2nd account and place it in gold, I'll be smurfing. And of course I'll go like 20/0 every game.

Better yet why don't you be that "God" player and carry your self out of silver? Blaming teammates for your lose a so low Elo.

One of the several things that separates higher ELO players from lower ELO players is consistency. At lower ELO you have a player that might dominate one match then feed like he's trying to end world hunger the next because they don't have the same decision making ability and consistency in execution that higher ELO players do.

This is on top of that fact that it's perfectly normal for people to have bad and good games, which can make low elo games a huge swing sometimes.

This is because you're in low elo. One of the common traits of bad players is inconsistency.

The ranked system actually does a good job of making a fair match, but before mid gold this doesn't matter as much due to stupid players and tilt.

Also, if you improve, you will win more and climb. Being able to do a mockup 1v1 against your plat friend in a custom game has little merit if you aren't transferring that stronger laning into wins.

I experienced this when climbing out of silver and still experience this in gold. I would recommend taking a break from ranked and play normals with your higher elo friends. That way you can improve your skill by playing against better players. After doing that for awhile you should be able to go into ranked with whatever couple champions you should be solely playing and win games consistently. I climbed with Elise and have a win rate ranging from 68-72% on her in ranked. I think you should do the same as me and find that one champion that you know you can carry all the scrubs on your team with.

I feel ya. I got placed in Silver III and dropped to Silver IV only to get lucky with a couple of teams and bounce back to Silver III to only drop the bottum of Silver III.

Am i great, nope. Do i do ok with certain champs, yep but i have to have good teammates too. I don't blame my loses on just one player. Most were due to my team not having as good of communication and skill as our opponent while some were due to bad calls or engages on my part. But that's the thing, how can you learn from those loses? By studying what went wrong and working on improving. For instance: i went evelynn jg and got curbstomped. Why? Because I timed my ganks wrong and was way to squishy to help as much as they needed it. What did i learn, wait for the right time to gank. If my team is telling me to gank but I don't think it is the right time for me, i won't gank and wi keep farming until i feel that it is the right opportunity to gank.

You don't understand the game. Number one, not everyone has played a huge amount of ranked games, especially in silver III and the like. The system can't place them in plat I for winning 8 games, so it's possible to end up playing with people who will eventually climb much higher, or drop lower after exhausting their lucky win streak. This does change with rank - the higher you climb, the fewer people that have not been placed properly yet are going to be in your games.

Number two, the game is snowbally - the more you win, the easier it gets to keep winning. Someone who went 2/0 in the first 6 minutes has a great chance of reaching 5/0 soon if the enemy doesn't use greater numbers to beat them. And that 'idiot' who tried to fight after dying once or twice was trying to stop the snowball while his enemy hasn't bought an item yet. If he succeeds, it might be the only way to salvage the lane. Losing doesn't make you a bad player, playing badly does. This will never change. This game will have kill streaks forever.

Number three, the game is heterogeneous. The skills required to play a single champion/role don't transfer 100% to every other position. It is possible for a single player to perform very differently depending on what role and champion they are given. This won't change, but you can manage it by discussing your choices in champion select and minimize your losses by specializing in unpopular roles or spamming the most powerful champions.

In other words, while the ranking system may SEEM inaccurate, it gets better as you play, but it retains a variable element because it does not account for skill variations within players, only between players. The new ranking system that is similar to Team Builder is an attempt to correct this flaw, so pray it gets deployed soon.

I understand if you like being competitive in games and all, but sometimes kicking yourself in the ass by playing Ranked in League is just not worth it.

You have to keep in mind that it's the beginning of the season. Many of the higher elo players have just started climbing or are still in the process. Also, some high skill players could be struggling with some of the changes in the new season that may be hurting their performance temporarily. Just ride it out and it should settle a little later on.

I agree with you 100%. the skill gap and knowledge between players is so bad in silver that somedays i just wont play ranked. i started playing league less than a year ago, and started playing ranked 3 or 4 months ago. I placed Silver 3 and climbed to my Siver 1 promos only to lose those and fall to Silver 4. Since i have bounced back and forth between S2 and S4. I am almost always positive on kda and have regular games where i have half my teams kills but in the end it doesnt matter. Ranked is a joke in that LP is determined by win or loss and not individual effort.

Ranked should be based on numbers and then determine gain or loss of LP. Someone with good cs and positive KDA that had a majority of participation in objectives should not lose as much as someone that feeds. and vice versa on winning.

Blame the smurfs. I've stopped playing ranked completely because of the issues you've outlined.
