How to make League great again

RawDogShaw··42 votes·2,358 views

As many of you have figured out already, League is very unbalanced and needs major game play updates. Here are a few ideas that I have that could make League a better and fairer game:

  1. Stop making new Champs. While I get that league makes money off of new champs and their accompanying skins, I believe that with every new champ they release is OP/Broken at first and then they try to nerf/fix it by bumping up other champs. This makes the updates after a new champ release like experimentation with champ balance and pretty much makes the game feel like it's still in beta.

  2. Bring back Solo Que Ranked. Ranked is currently a big mix of random players vs teams/groups and makes it hard for those trying to move up in ranked that don't have teams.

  3. Bring back Ranked Teams. When I was playing with my friends in ranked it was fun knowing that I was playing against another team that all knew each other. Ever since Riot removed this I've never felt like playing ranked due to how unfair the match making was.

  4. New Maps. Summoner's Rift has become very boring because it's the same old story every game. New maps would test players skill and strategy.

  5. High Resolution Support. I play on a 4k monitor and while the game looks beautiful in 4k, it's impossible to play effectively. Currently the only issues are with Hud and icons. As more players move to resolutions higher than 1080p these issues need to be fixed.

  6. New game engine. I am not sure what game engine League is using, but it seems Direct X 9 based. Having a new game engine would open up possibilities and have better support in future. A new game engine would also allow for more customization.

Thank you for reading and if you have any question or thoughts please share.

Notice how you had 7 likes then dropped to 2 while only having a 3 view difference? That also just proves how crappy this over sensitive and rash minded this community became.

If I post anything on the boards, I get - 12 automatic downvotes without anyone reading because I have a couple losers, who are completely pathetic following me around the boards. So now I have to comment on other people's board posts to get reasonable, rational criticism. Yesterday I made a post it got -12 within 1 min, it was a 3min min post. I deleted the thread, reposted it somewhere else. Got 30 + upvotes.

Same thing with everything I do, made a post about Graves cigar joke. Got -7 votes in a minute, reposted it on the exact same joke, positive upvotes on a 400 + upvote thread.

Some people in this community have legitimate issues.

for the first point, you rather want balancing the champ before the release instead of not making any.

League is in a very dark age from season 5, they ignored the community to this day since and things are just getting worse... Hopefully they can bring back the glory of Seasons 3+4.

RawDogShaw9 votes

Yeah, I hope so. I think season 5 was the most balanced season so far. I don't understand why they decided to throw away all the progress they made to having a fair game.

Except for patch 5.16. I still remember Skarner...

If you balance another champ to the point of people using it again I think people will then buy that champ and probably skins for it too. So really balance should make them money too you would think.

Stop releasing champions. Everything else, well thought out. But the champion thing is the most idiotic thing I have seen all day, and the dude behind me in French class says shit like "African titties" without context and laughs for 3 minutes. That won't help the game, that will kill a company.

elon wątroba1 votes

Yeah, they already have slowed "production" of champion and most of them are niche ones.

Stop making new Champs.

I disagree with this one, simply because new champions add a lot of flavor to the game. The balance problems we're seeing now are far more widespread, and I think a more likely cause of the current imbalances is that Riot design/balance is moving too quickly. It seems like problems are being left in place for longer because of how many massive updates have gone through recently, and I'd like to see the current state of the game stabilized before another huge update.

Bring back Solo Que Ranked.

Agreed, but not necessarily for the reason you mentioned (hard to move up the ranks). I haven't really had any trouble with that yet, but the thing that does bother me is how Dynamic Queue is mathematically inferior to pure Solo Queue when considering the potential accuracy of matchmaking. Ranked games should not be made into a casual experience, in my opinion, the whole point of the Ranked queue is to test your skill. It's far less fun to do that when the system is intentionally inaccurate.

Bring back Ranked Teams.

A friend of mine and I are working on a proposal that would cover this, basically it'd be open to far more people than just the 7 other people in your ranked team with you. The key is that Riot would have to remove Dynamic Queue in Ranked, which seems unlikely at this point.

New Maps.

I disagree here, new maps have been tested in the past and haven't gone particularly well (other than ARAM since it's a different game mode). It's possible that's due to Riot's lack of support of maps outside of Summoner's Rift, but new maps do segment the community.

High Resolution Support

I wouldn't know. :P

New game engine.

I'm sure Riot would love to do this, but upgrading to DirectX 10 or 11 would be a massive undertaking. I expect it's completely unfeasible for them to do that, and it might actually be easier to custom code a new game in a new engine than it would be to renovate the current game.

As far as maps go, obviously if a gamemode isn't supported well it's going to fail. That's like planting tomatoes and cucumbers, only bothering to weed/water the cucumbers, then announce at the end of the season "tomatoes are a waste of time and unviable so we're not going to plant them again". Dominion would have performed substantially better had Riot bothered to police the bots and properly balance champions for it.

And ARAM works because ARAM players are by definition masochists, and therefore require less TLC from Riot to play the mode. (/joking)

New flavour? Loool. Mate, this game has so many champs that if you play a different champ every game, by the time you start over, the champs feel different. I mean I believe over half the player plays haven't played half the champs in the game. And with more being added, it becomes closer to the truth. They need to make 2 champs a year, keep the anticipation high and try to balance the shit that is the current game state. If they don't, no amount of new champs will stop players from leaving.

  1. Different. F'ing. Teams. How many times does this need to be said
  2. Matter of opinion
  3. dynamic queue is a more balanced and easier to access ranked 5s
  4. That takes a very long time 5 and 6. Some of those problems are likely to be fixed with the new client, and the old engine is likely used to ensure compatibility with older machines

{quoted} 3. dynamic queue is a more balanced and easier to access ranked 5s

You're the first person that I've ever seen claiming that. Literally.

Probably because it's not really true, DQ is absolutely cancer for a group of anything less than four, and if you can get 4 together you could get 5 together anyhow.

DeathBurst2 votes

DQ is certainly not cancer. Going in DQ as 2 or 3 is great, that's what I do most of the time. And when I go solo, I usually have no problem with the premade I'm matched with. "Usually" as in, 95% of my solo games.

ModWulf Helhammer1 votes

It is a more balanced version of ranked 5s because now it has the same limitations that a normal ranked queue has. With the old system, you could have people from all different ranks join a team, then competing with other teams of assorted ranks. Since now a 5 man team has to be within the normal rank limitations, the skill balance is much more equal.

Easier to access because now you don't have a set number of people that can play in the team. One of your people isn't online? Then you have the entire friend list of the other 4 people to make the whole team, rather then the few subs that you could have available with ranked teams.

DeathBurst2 votes

Agree with you on most things, but there is no point in repeating what was already said, so I'll just react to what I disagree with. No offense meant ;)

{quoted} 3- dynamic queue is a more balanced and easier to access ranked 5s

"DQ more balanced than Ranked 5s", I don't see why. Easier to access, sure, but that's not really the goal of Ranked 5s anyway. If you want an easy access mode, there is Normal Draft. To be clear: I love DQ, but defending it with bad arguments is just opening the doors to more critics.

4- That takes a very long time

That would be a good argument if Riot had showed an interest in creating new maps. But to the contrary, they have stated many times they want to focus solely on Rift for competitive and even closed Dominion recently. For fun though, the fact that RGM was released recently is a good argument to reply to OP.

Different teams, yes. Different funding source, no. While I can't blame the champion design team for current balance issues, I can fault them for continuing to output champions if the current ones still aren't balanced. It would be all too easy for Riot to divert resources from champion design towards game balance.

ModWulf Helhammer2 votes

Not really, no. You can't just shut down one whole area which will then magically make the other areas work better. If that was the case, why have a music team make a new login for every event that come around for league? Just make one a season, and then use that funding elsewhere.

Money doesn't make things work faster. You can't just shove funds somewhere and expect it to work better.

Of course you can! Pay nine women instead of one, and get a shiny new baby in barely one month.

New maps are incredibly over done. Put butchers bridge for ARAM, come up with maybe a 2v2 or 4v4, and a skin for SR, maybe new jg.

RawDogShaw1 votes

For the new maps it wouldn't just be skins, it would be different layouts. Also maps based on the different areas champs are from would give you a bonus if you played the champ on its home map. Plus if they tied in skin bonuses like if you have an ice skin your champ would get a movement bonus on an ice type map.

Arakadia1 votes

I'm not sure about an ice skin giving movement bonus as that makes paying money give you an advantage. But i think it would be cool to maybe add a new walk animation or the like. That would be pretty sick, your other ideas.

It´s an RTS engine. With the exception of ingame cutscenes, which use completely different models and textures, not even Starcraft 2 is all that wow, graphics-wise.

Besides, i don´t see anything wrong with DX9-based engines. See Darksiders. And using a different one would make League lose its cartoon-ish/fantasy style that´s iconic to it. If you want a MOBA with nice graphics and shit, go play DOTA.

New maps are a horrible idea. If anything they should just fix the ones they have and allow for the rotating game mode to be all week long. The amount of balance that would go into multiple maps is insane. The whole game is balanced around SR and any other map would be wildly imbalanced. Individual map balance is a lot more overhead and it is confusing to players as to why a cooldown or cast range is different.

In order to make League great again, the only way is to elect Donald Trump. After all, that's his slogan. He's got the best words.

1.) Your first point has been discussed already so many times I tire of seeing it. Riot does that on purpose.

2.) League wants to appeal to a wider audience and bring their friends. A 5 man or 2 man premade group only for ranked closed off a lot of people.

3.) You can still have Ranked Teams, just register. Stay with you team, and you'll feel closer than any roster will.

4.) They have rotating game que. I need a fix a little more often of it, but it's something different.

5.) 4K expansion is unreasonable. The technology isn't even adopted by other major developers. I wouldn't push Riot to do this.

6.) League is the only game I can run off a USB, on any potato. Not everyone everywhere spends as much as I or you do on high end equipment. This would close off players instead of increasing the pool size.

You're welcome for rebuttal.

Thank you all for your comments and discussion. There has been a lot of feedback about new maps and my thoughts about them on a deeper level are:

  1. With every new champ making new maps are farther away. League already has 131 Champs and having new maps means they all need to be tested and fixed for each new map. I know from a programming stand point it will take a lot of work to do that, but it isn't impossible.

  2. New maps would be for normal 5v5 game mode. Once enough have a game lobby system with map rotation.

  3. Champ type specific maps. Certain champs would gain advantages based on their back story. A void type map would give bonuses to champs like Vel'Koz and Cho'Gath. Doing this would implement a home champ advantage and would add another layer of strategy to the game.

New maps for any game are not easy to make and require lots of work, but I believe that league is at a point where there are enough champs and new maps will really take the game to the next level.
